On my '72 GTO I found the transmission build date code : P2E31A, which denotes P-muncie 2-72 E-May 31-a-m-20. The cars build sheet shows a build date of 6/14/72. I can't seem to find the VIN # on the transmission case. The car is a 50K original owner car, and has absolutely never had the transmission out (still original clutch). Maybe I am not looking in the right place.

Jim, they didn't always get a VIN stamp. Have had several dozen big output shaft Muncies & some were lacking the stamp too.

The Muncie for my 70'GTO has the VIN stamped on the passenger side flange that buts up to the bellhousing. The numbers are a little larger than these fonts on the post and easily seen whith transimission in the car.

Found the VIN # on the transmission. It was at the top running for and aft of the transmission and it does match the car. Thanks for all of the input
