Almost light enough for a Glide but not quite. If it were me, I would run a TH350 with good strong innards or a race-prepped TH400. That combo is going to like a stall of around 4500-5000 in an 8 inch converter. Buy a good brand--I use Continental but there are others with really good reps. Good luck.

All things considered...don't much reveal the Trans-choice....until :

Pro-systems 950HP....clearly TH400 only.
Pro-systems 950HP....clearly a LARGE Diameter converter with an intentional stall selection.

Us simple folks on this board justa don't realize that Converters saturate...the smaller they are, the less ultimate torque they can transfer.

That would be my present converter-selection issue for 650HP, and a 455 with 5200RPM shiftpoints.

I'll be the blacksheep but.... 1.96 low gear glide and 9" 4500 stall. I've used 'glides around 3200#'s and seen improvement over Th350 and 400's even with factory gear ratios. Good luck whichever route you take.

With a 3.75 stroke and making peak torque at 5000, it sounds as though your shift points may approach 6500 -7000. That would be meer speculation. I do not think you can compare a 455 to this combo as far as drivetrain components go. I thought about the glide but I have aleays heard that 3000 lbs and under was the magic number. No?

How high are you planning on turning this motor?

Thanks for the ideas so far guys I appreciate it,keep em coming.I don't plan on shifting this motor anywhere past 6400-6500 rpm,I personally did'nt want to run stock rods but I did'nt have enough money at the time of assemblly for a good set so I worked with what I had,so far the engine has close to 15 dyno runs on it,but no street or track time so hopefully it will stay together.

Thanks Rob.

TH400 since you'll need to keep the RPM down, the extra gear will help.

9" or 10" converter. Try around 4000-4400 stall. Get it tight.

Depends on alot of things Rob. If the converter is "right", it will creep in idle, just like a regular car. You will notice the engine revving higher, of course, and the converter won't be fully locked untill you reach the stall speed (or at least close to it), which will generate a little more heat. A good trans cooler will be mandatory and Mobile 1 trans fluid is always a safe bet. I use it.

Generally, the bigger the converter, the tighter it will act. Normally, I would recommend ATI, but lately, they have been difficult, if not impossible to deal with reguarding converters in a couple of friends' cars. Not sure what they're doing over there. But, with dyno sheets in hand, you should be better off han my friends were.

Chance favors the prepared mind.

Thanks again Bruce for the info,I will give ATI a call tomorrow and see what they have to say,and I'll let you guys know. The car already has a large B&M tranny cooler installed so it should help keep the temps down.

Thanks again Rob.

If you are just going to bracket race it I would run a powerglide with a 4000-4500 stall. This way you only have one shift to mess up.
Consult the converter manufacturer before purchasing. Continental,ATI,Turbo Action,Hughes,Precision ETC. Take your pick.
I'd probably go with a Continental because they seem to have a better feel for what Pontiac motors like.

TH400 w/8" ATI for racing. They're 'streetable' but not the nicest deal for cruising. Sorry to hear they've been difficult as of late they're usually pretty sharp.

I am going with a dynamic converter this time. They have come very highly recommended by my stocker friend, so I called them and they are very very friendly to talk to. I also do have another friend that is running one of their 8" TC and he is very happy with it, so I guess I will give them a shot. One thing that did help my decision was the list of stockers and super stockers that are running dynamic converters and winning, Al Corda is one of them and is also the winnings stocker of all time (I believe). So here is the website so you can check them out if you like.

A 350 will handle that job with no problem. A 700 would too. If you plan on really street driving the 700 would be hard to beat. 2.87:1 final drive

I run a powerglide with a universal case. My car weighs 3175 with driver. They are cheap to build, they are 40lbs lighter than a th350 and take take less hp to turn one. I had problems breaking the hardened race in my th350.

Jim, or anyone who has had 350 sprag problems, the hardened (black) aftermarket races are not worth the metal they are made of. If a 350 is built on a budget the stock race, in good shape, is worth 3 black ones.
The aftermarket drums available from Transmission Speciaties, or TCI are the only way to go when reliability is important.
The stock sprag outer race doesn't need to be hardened. It needs more contact than the 8 small rollers can supply. The race flexes because of the long distance between the rollers. The black race breaks because it cannot flex. The stock race breaks because it flexes beyond it's capability usually more than once.

My GTO weighs 3250 with me in it. (close to yours)
I'm currently running a 406. I also run a 4.10 gear with a 29" tire. The trans is a TH400 with a TCI super competition 10" converter. The advertised stall speed was 3000. It actually pulls to 4400 with slicks on the car. Hello 60ft times! 1.56 is the best so far. I shift at 5800 and go through the traps at 6200 roughly. Best et so far is an 11.40 at 114mph. I wouldn't trade the converter for anything. It will not creep however, in fact, a little throttle is required to get the car to move. Our motors are similar, however, you've got more compression. Whereas my cam is a little bigger and heads flow a little more? 597/607, 249/252, stock E-heads, 10.25:1. Your car should easily run the same # as mine, if not quicker as I was struggling with a bad off the line bog. Good luck!
