I read somewhere that the only reason the '67 Firebird 400 engine put out 325 HP compared to the same engine in the Goat putting out 360 was because of a throttle stop or governor mechanism on the carb. Is this a myth? If not, can anyone reveal the actual facts?

Robby, Not a myth. There is a little tab on the throttle bracket that prevents the carb from opening to wide throttle. I forget if you can remove it or you have to bend it to remove the curse. Until someone comes along and explains it better than me, take a real good look at the carb linkage and I think you'll see it.

if i remember right there's a tab on the secondary butterfly stop. you can bend it to achieve full air valve travel. mike

From what I have read this was a ploy used by Pontiac on the 1967 through 1969 Firebirds, including the '69 Trans Am, to keep power to weight ratios in line with Federal guidelines/regulations. On the '69 T/A it was a little threaded pin on the linkage side of the carb. Unscrew the little bugger and there you go, WOT.
