That is great news and bad news for me. Do I go ahead with my engine plans or put things on hold now until the cranks become available? These really are good times to be in the Pontiac hobby.

You can order from AllPontiac.com or BOP at a future date. Delv. is early spring. I will be kicking them in the butt to get them faster. Estmated price is $1,095.00 at this time. Material is 4130 forging, and Nitrided.

Bob...why the cross drilling? I've read alot on the subject from Reher-Morrison and they strongly advise against it in most cases. I'll take mine with standard Pontiac drilling with the oil holes chamfered (wink).

Bob -- The info on the crank is great -- a couple of questions. Will they be available in both large and small main size and BB Chev rod bearing configuration? Your post indicated cross drilled -- there was a very good artical in the National Dragster by a major engine builder that was very much against cross drilling -- for a number of reasons -- Just some FYI for you guy's to look at. Will they be available in custom stroke sizes?

Will they be knived edge or anything like that or will they be just like the stock cranks but forged? I tried calling but no answer will try again later.

They will have a semi knive edging done but not a full knife edge.

Will there be an option to not have it crossed drill for those that will be turning alot of rpm and making the hp? I hope you get a LARGE first shipment because I think they will be going fast.

Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) is used in specifications for all high-grade steels used in automotive and aircraft construction...
Each SAE number consists of a group of digits...(normally 4, but not always) The first digit represents the type of steel...(pricipal alloy element) The second digit represents the percentage of the principle alloying element... The last two or three usually, represent the percentage, in hundredths of 1 percent, of carbon in the alloy... For example, SAE number 4130 indicates Molybdenum steel containing 1 percent molybdenum and 30 hundredths of 1 percent of carbon... Here is the steel chart... Carbon 1xxx Nickel 2xxx Nickel-chromium 3xxx Molybdenum 4xxx Chromium 5xxx Chromium-vanadium 6xxx Tungsten 7xxx Silicon-manganese 8xxx I hope this helps...

Nitriding is not part of the original alloy.
It's basically a process or 'coating' that makes the surface harder.

A couple of clarifications on the forged crank deal.
1) The material will be a 4340 non-twist forging. 2) The crank will NOT be cross drilled. It will incorporate the latest technology in crank oiling, scoop oil holes and straight shot oil timing. This process pressurizes at the low pressure part of the stroke and traps the oil wedge during the high pressure part of the stroke. Cross drilling forces the oil pressure to try and overcome combustion pressure of 1000 plus psi which and translate to 10,000 psi at the bearing. This force will push the oil right back out the journal and send it to another place in the crank. Straight shot traps the oil and it has no where to go but to the rod bearing. It is the best oiling system currently available for low or high HP motors at this time. 3) The 3 inch main cranks will be available in 4, 4.25, and 4.5 inch strokes with 2.200 rod journals. 4) We are hoping to produce a 3 ¼ main but do not yet know if it will happen. If it does it will probably be available in a 4.250 stroke only. 5) Target price is $1095.00 but is not definite at this time. 6) The cranks will be gas nitrided, no induction hardening 7) Neither BOP Engineering or All-Pontiac.com are taking orders at this time We will have more information soon so please be patient. With that said we are pleased to be working together with Frank and Bob to bring high quality racing parts to the Pontiac community.

We definitely need the high speed oiling system as opposed to the factory style oiling system. David Reher's article from National Dragster provides some interesting information on why cross-drilled cranks shouldn't be used.
