head bolts how much torque for a 400 ?
on my 74 pontiac firebird i have a 400 block, i am reinstalling the factory heads, my haynes repair book is saying 130 ft lbs of torque for the head bolts and when i got my head bolts, the little paper with it says only to torque it to 60/75 ft lbs of torque ...
any suggestions on what its supposed to be or which info os more reliable...

Factory bolts are 95 ft/lbs.
Are you using aftermarket bolts/studs?

Yeah, I agree with johhta1. Torque should be 95 ft-lb. The Haynes manual is (dangerously) wrong. But 95 ft-lb assumes you use engine oil or one of the standard neverseez-type thread anti-seize lubes designed to give the same coefficient of friction as oil.
If the bolt supplier recommends using moly, ie molybdenum disulfide, that will lower the torque required because moly is a fantastic lubricant with a much lower friction compared to oil. ARP does this and causes no end of confusion. So torque the bolts to 95 ft-lb using oil or standard thread anti-seize compound. |

My chilton manual say 95 ft. lbs for the 400 all years except '77 it says 100 ft. lbs. for factory bolts. The paper I got with my ARP studs said that the 130 ft. lbs torque was if you were using 30wt motor oil but much less torque if you use a moly compound. I can't remember the torque for the moly compound but I have that paper is around here somewhere.
