Default Ram Air D port exhaust manifolds.

I am trying to quiet my car down but do not want to lose alot of performance.
I am thinking of going with ram air D port exhaust manifolds. I am running a 60916 cam, 400 TA. I currently have Hooker SC headers. Will I lose alot of performance on the topend? I am already running turbo mufflers.

Thanks

You probably won't notice much "seat of the pants" difference, and the manifolds shouldn't leak or resonate like headers.

Default ram air man.

I'm not sure about the header comparison but I run R/A mans.on my 400 w/8.8 comp 211-166s lightly ported 480 lift and I'm happy w/perf. and very pleased w/the totaly maintenance free manifolds.

Not to hijack your thread, but I am thinking about doing the same thing (Hookers to HO manifolds) with my '65 GTO. I'd like to gain some clearance (I'm lowered) and make things look a tad more stock underhood. Where are people buying their HO manifolds? Best price I can find is $299 at The Parts Place, but I'm not sure why they are $100+ less than everywhere else.

Default R/A man.cost

I bought mine about 5 years ago .For some reason $329 comes to mind.Either from PY or Ames. But considering good headers are also that much and much more for ceramic.Plus they practicly last for ever and most guys don't part with the used ones tells you something.

I got mine from Ram Air Restoration Enterprises a couple years ago. Cost a little more for the 2.5" outlets but worth it I think. Seems like $349 sounds right. Check their website for his current prices. If I had it to do over I'd get the ceramic coated but mine still look new with the Eastwood manifold paint.

Cool go low

I don't believe that there are presently any "bad" quality repros floating around. I paid $300 for RA IVs with flanges...come with guarantee. A guy in Indiana makes them, ask Parts Place about origin and guarantee.

I replaced my RA exhaust manifolds with stainless steel headers & it is quieter with the headers.

I just switched from ram air manifolds to dougs headers and the car is not louder,it actually sounds better,a lower rumble. You wont be able to tell the seat of the pants difference, but I picked up 2 mph in the 1/4.

Shim-up the Driver Motor mount about a Half-Inch, for a fit into the A-body. Work with it. Worked for me, but sold it and have since used 4-tube headers, where sealing is a science.

How do the Ram Air Manifolds pictured in form74's picture seal? There clearly is a bolt hole missing in the centre and left ports.

Phil

Phil has a good point. I saw some on Ebay with only 3 bolt holes made into the exhaust manifold? 3 Holes will seal the exhaust. The ones I saw at Ram Air Restorations have 5 holes on the drivers side and 4 holes on the passenger side. Did Ram Air Restorations modify their castings?

yea, i had dougs headers and went to swap to the ramair exhuast manifolds to quiet it down a little and to my surprise they were a little louder and a little more resonance.

I just finished putting the RARE HO manifolds on my 66 GTO also with the 60916 cam and my 093 heads are ported and flowed. I had a Gardener bone stock exhaust on it. I also got the X pipe setup from RARE. I'm now running the Georlich x122 mufflers. Guys, it feels like i had the park brake on before. Before i did the exhaust with the head work and cam already in, i dynoed 209 horse at the rear wheel, and this past monday i dynoed 269.2 at the rear wheel. I'm not saying all of this is due to the exhaust, because i'm sure i wasn't getting all of the benefit of my head work and cam because it was so corked up. I'm extremely happy with all of the stuff i got from RARE, excellent quality parts and service. I had everything except the tailpipes ceramic coated and it not only looks pretty, but it dramatically dropped my under hood temperatures.

I just ordered a set of the non-longbranch RARE headers for my A body, I was scared for a minute...

I assume they will seal pretty well; that's a massive casting (notice that the 'missing' bolts are on the inside of the massive part of the casting, I don't think that part would flex or warp...)

Who has a photo of an original RA cast-iron header for comparison purposes?

The RA III Manifolds seal just fine. I have a set on my daily driven GTO and have had them on there for two years. They have not leaked yet. I just purchased the 2.5 " set from Paul at Ram Air Restorations for my Can Am. They are a breeze to install and are headache free when it comes to oil changes and starter access.
