GTO Radio
I wonder if someone knows if the 68 GTO radio had black station selector buttons or chrome.

Black..it's in 69 that it's a toss up as I've seen most with black, but some had the chrome (even though chrome was said to be G/P and B-body only)...

AM Rock?
I have an AM/FM stereo radio in my 68 GTO that is original equipment. It has chrome push buttons.
I believe that the radio options for the 68 and 69 GTO were identical. The AM only radios may have come with black presets. |

Chrome radio buttons on 1968 GTO
The buttons where chrome. The person that mentioned black buttons on a 1968 is wrong.

Royal, here are a few examples of 68 GTO's I've seen with Black buttons...I never saw them with chrome (but doesn't mean they never existed..I only saw the chrome exceptions on 69's)...So 68 DID have black pushbuttons....

Hi,
Since my car was used as an example picture (blue interior with 8-track player) I can tell you that the AM radio is the original stock radio. U63 Radio Push Button is the window sticker option listing. The 8-track is: U57 Tape Player Stereo. Both of these were installed at the final assembly point: Fremont, Calif. Car was bought new by my Dad in Denver, Colorado. He never had a problem with the radio. He kept a book by date and mileage for all gas, oil, tires and other maitanance he put into the car. Mike

Radio buttons -- Chrome
GM assembly manuals say chrome. Specific plants may have used equipment from Lemans, temepest etc., but again GM assembly manuals say chrome. Even AM radios in 1968 were chrome. I know I have had several. Based on the offical GM data published chrome is correct.

Original 68 AM radio on a 30k Lemans. Radio has never been out of the car. I'm going with black as well.

I would concur that the radio in the pics that 69gtocv is a stock insatallation, especially since it has the 68 only black lettering on the "tone" control.
I think there has to be some grey area as to absolutely what goes in what as far as radios are concerned. Since you could get an upgrade at the dealer, from a std AM to AM/FM, Stereo, Verbaphonic, or 8 Track combination, what the dealer had in stock could also affect what's in the car. At the factory level, there could also be a supply fubar that would coincide with the worker putting in a chrome or black knob radio, since there would be no consumer price difference as to the particular color, but there would be a discrepancy in the build sheet if an AM/FM was installed where there should be an AM only radio. While body manuals and such are possibly the best guidelines we have, they cannot be construed as an "absolute truth"

My '68 AM has black buttons. I don't know with 100% certainty that it hasn't been swapped out, but I seriously doubt it. The AM/FM might've had chrome in '68.

I have an original AM radio in my '68 and the buttons are black. I had a '69 AM/FM unit a few years back and the buttons were chrome.

you all could check the radio number on the side sticker to confirm model no. and manufacture date, but I think black is correct.

buttons
I think it could be either way, i have seen both, and i think it was an interior dress up item, you know like pedal stainless. I have a gm delco radio manual, and it shows both chrome and black, even though the manuals pics are black and white, you can see one has chrome buttons.
I know for sure am-fm's are all chrome, either mono or stereo. |
