Hi All,

I've got a chance to pick up a 455 block with 4 bolt caps
and HO 197 heads, but can't figure out some of the numbers on the block.

Cast is 485428 which I understand to be a 455 anywhere
from '71 to '74. The code is a YC which could be '70 or '73?
Above the code is C(or 0)087535. Number down the side of
the timing cover is 220(orD)3(or8)10800.

The date code is indistinguishable.

Any help from the decode detectives would be immensely appreciated.

I believe its a 70 cast for 71 model year application, its not a 73 with 4 bolt caps as far as I know. the caps are worth as much as the block hehe

Look for a big 72 number by the distributor hole (although, it could be any 7x number). My deductions by the info provided, leads me to believe it was a B-body 455, built in '72 (possibly Grandville).

Partial VIN, if he read it correctly, states it was in a '72 car. All '70-74 455 blocks were drilled for 4-bolt caps. Sound like someone may have wrecked the block on their '71 HO and transferred the the good parts to a different block.

I have had/work on 71, 72, and 73 455 blocks. All were drilled for four bolt mains. The 71 block was drilled and tapped w/two bolt caps, the 73 block was drilled but not tapped. The 72 block had the four bolt caps.

This is not to imply that all 72 455's have four bolt caps, the block I had was probably out of an HO. I don't remember the engine code that it was stamped with.

My friend knows the history of the car and engine,
so I'm not going in totally blind.

I intend on beefy it up and putting in my new '71 TA 4spd.
