Default Stampings on deck surface?

I just noticed these on both sides of my 73 455's block deck. Each cylinder's deck surface, towards the outside of the motor, is stamped with a "T" or a "P". The "T" stamping is on the rear cylinders. The rest of the cylinders are stamped with a "P"

Is this a factory stamping?
What do they mean?
Seems like stamping the block face would create some distortion locally.

more than likely a piston fitting code for the assembly guys. One guy measures the cylinders and stamps a code on the deck. Chevy uses numbers.

Pontiac pistons are selectively fit from the factory. As 74t/a said, it tells the assembler what size piston to install.
