Default 66 Front Speaker

Has anyone had their front speaker re-coned? By who, $ and how did it come out. Ames sells a replacement but they told me it was 6 ohm which I believe can damage stock radio.

6 OHM will not damage your radio.
I ran 2 ohm speakers before I installed my amp.
I have a new Pioneer 4"X10", if your interested shoot me a P-M.

The six ohm WILL damage your radio. It won't blow it immediately, but it will eventually burn up the amplifier section of the radio. You need to run the 10 ohm speaker with the factory radio. I had mine reconed 7 years ago by a guy named Richard Shawmut in Mass. I found him in hemmings, but i don't know if he still does it. I paid $40 back when i had mine done. A six ohm speaker draws almost double the amt of current, and will really heat that radio up!

Can't you run a 4 ohm resistor in line with the 6 ohm speaker to get the correct resistance?

No -- speakers are rated by their impedance (resistance to AC current flow). This has no relationship to resistance (to DC current flow). It's confusing, because impedance and resistance are both measured in ohms. I'm not sure what the resistance would measure on a 10-ohm speaker, but I'd bet it's nowhere near 10 ohms.

You can add a 4 ohm resistor to present approx 10 to the amplifier output to keep the amp happy but you won't get max output from the speaker. It may be enuf to work ok, tho.

True that the speaker impedance is not necessarily 10 or 6 or 4 ohms across the entire frequency range, but there is no perfect speaker. The DC resistance value is close enuf.

The ideal case would be a speaker that presents a perfect value of impedance from low to high frequencies, but they don't so you get close enuf.

I sent the speaker to The Speaker Shop and they are shipping it back in a few days. Total cost to rebuild and ship back including new fabric dust cover was $77.
