To tube or not
I need some advice.Do you guys run tubes in your slicks?I had the ET streets,and never had a problem.Now I switched to the ET drags,and they leak like mad.I was told not to run the tubes cause they add weight,(makes sense),but I`ll do what I have to do,and lose the weight somewhere else.Any comments are appreciated.The tires in question are 28x11.50-15.Thanks,Mark.

Most folks running slicks without tubes use soap on the insides of them to keep the leakage down I believe.
Or something of that sort... |

I for one use tubes, one less thing that needs to be chased after. I would be curious if anyone has ever done any testing on the difference between the two setups. I am sure there would be some difference but how much in a heavy (+3000lbs) car? Of course one thing you have to have is screws in your rims when tubes are used for obvious reasons.

I use no tubes in my 28x11.5x15 Hoosier Quick Time Pro's. I have them screwed. I've had no leakage problems, but I do use Palmolive dish soap to coat the inside of the tires before I mount them. I used to run the same tire but smaller, and when I drilled the rims for screws I used Dawn, and it did not work as well. Just my $.02 My car weighs 3370 with me in it, and I run 17-18 psi.

Yes use Palmolive, I took the tubes out of my 15-11.5W back when the car was running low 10s@ 3450# and I picked up .06
Its rotational weight so that makes it even better if you can get rid of it. |

The 69GP has tubes in the 14x32x15’s but the altered I am building has 33x16x15’s with out tubes and leak like there is no tomorrow. I am game to try the Palmolive dish wash. So what is the “Palmolive procedure”? Just rub it in on the inside of the tire? Dilute with water and slush it around or what?

I just soak a cloth with Dawn and wipe the inside of the tire. My son says he he mixed his soap solution, about 4/5 water, 1/5 dishwashing liquid. Both of our tires are still up. We quit racing after Labor Day.

Reaction times are improved sometimes with tubes. If you're not pro tree racing that's not really an issue though.

I have run with and without tubes. Did not notice any difference. Also I thought that screwing the tires was more old school and wasn't necessary any more. The tires and wheels are both better quality. I don't see the pro guys doing it? I mark to see if the tire slides on the rim at launch and then add a pound or so more of air to slow the slide.

The real Pro guys run beadlocks.
Most other people are using screws, with even more on each side. Used to be about 5-8 screws a side. Now about 10-15. Warped, maybe your beads on the slicks are burgered up. Have to make sure the people that mount them know what they're doing. I run about 5.5 lbs in my slicks and the next week they still have 5.5 lbs. I won't go back to tubes.

I used a sponge to completely coat the inside with Dawn. Let dry overnight, another thin coat and mounted. Worked for me.

I have not used tubes in years, maybe 10. I use the dish soap before, but forgot this time. New 14.5X32 Goodyears. Still up yesterday, been a month.

I've run with and without tubes and had different results with different slicks. I run tubes in my Phoenix 28x10.5" as they are more stable on the top end and consistent (stiffer) off the line. Seems to depend on the tire and the car - no one answer. My Firebird weighs in at 3750lbs with me in it.
My first set of Phoenix slicks leaked air right out the sidewall without tubes...kind of made the decision easy.
