Default 1972 Hood Lock?

Did Pontiac make a security lock for the hood on 2nd gen firebirds?

Yes. There was a dealer installed/over the counter kit available. A little lever would be mounted under the dash with a cable going to the hood latch assembly at the front of the car. In the "LOCK" position an intruder couldn't pull on the handle in the grill to open the hood.

The kits show up on eBay a couple times a year but go for BIG BUX!! They're a pretty rare find.

Agree, was one for sale on ebay a while ago, he wanted like 400 for it. I send him a email after auction, he lives in NH. If I could have afforded it at the time, Id have bought it and made a few. Id like one too, and was going to use the 73 style but cant with my 72 nose set up.
I still may make one, I remember that lock, unlock lever well

WOW ! I didn't know they existed. I just paid 375.00 for a dual air cleaner for my 72 Formula plus a few thousand in the engine. Don't want to get nothing stolen. I'll keep an eye out if one appears in the future.

Thanks

Default Lock it Up

Been looking here also, I keep thinking someone may like my original shaker for their own, not necessarilly a Pontiac buff, but some wacko who wants it for their '86 Buick Regal.

Good news,,,,maybe. The parts place has a repro for $69.00. Only problem is it is listed for 70-72 442, 68-70 GTO. Not sure if it would work for firebirds.

There's an NOS one right now on ebay look under pontiac hood lock. Look's the same as the repro to me. Anyone know if the repro could be adapted to work on firebirds or 71-72 GTO?

There was a dealer-installed 2nd gen inside hood release package. if you have the book "Firebird & Trans Am 1967-1994" by Bill Holder & Philip Kunz there is a nice interior shot of a yellow 70 Formula on pg 34 with this item installed. My 70 Formula has this same set up but I don't have any handy photos of it. It looks like a pretty sanitary installation with the exception of the modification to the RH grille for the secondary catch. I am not sure why it was moved from Left to Right, but my car has an obviously hand-cut hole which is pretty much a mirror image of the hole in the LH grille where the normal hood release is found. While it looks like a "factory" part (RH grill mod excepted) there is no mention of it on the PHS or build sheet so I have always assumed it to be a dealer-installed accessory.

This IS NOT a "hood release" Its great info there is a repop available and Ill make sure it works on my car. All this does is DISABLE the front pull release, or enable it

Pontiac did have a inside hood release and used latch GR #8.083 part #9722701 and moves the secondary catch to the right grille.

I see that PY has one on the home page. Will it fit the 72 Firebird?

That's my high bid. The other one was at 230.00 last time I looked at the auction. PY has this one in the link below.

Well, I won this auction so I hope it works for a 72 Formula. I don't see why it wouldn't.

Here is an interesting one: This one is different than what is pictured above. It says it is specific to firebirds:

Here's the correct 1971 A-G hood lock installed on my SSJ. When buying this assembly, it's imperative that you have the slide block & bracket that mount on the rad support next to the hood latch itself. Without those two pieces, the whole thing is useless.

This is a inside hood release conversion kit. From what I read in the above post, you have to cut a hole in the Pass side grill.

Yup! That link (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Pont...1QQcmdZViewItem) shows a kit that is identical to what is installed in my 70 Formula. For whatever reason they chose not to use the secondary pull in the LH grille and instead there is a hand-cut hole in the right hand grille (mirror image to left) where the secondary release is located.
