Oil Pump Shopping
OK.. Which one do I want to buy... the "High Pressure"?? or the "High Volume" ?? I'm getting confused....

I always though High Volume was the way to go. I guess by all the other responses the opposite is true here.

Pontiac only makes Hi-Pressure oil pumps, 60 and 80 psi pumps.
The only other would be a Titan pump, which is aftermarket and Hi-Dollars. Mod's are necessary with the Titan. Jeff |

I use the Mellings M54DS, a 60# high-pressure pump. I've never seen a Pontiac high-volume pump advertised. Get one, I've never had any oiling issues with this pump in all the Pontiac engines I've used it in.
The Titan is a very expensive pump for racing engines, requiring a big 'pocket' be added to the oil pan to clear it. Not worth considering for a mild street engine.

Melling 54 DS all the way baby. It's the one to use. The 80 pounder gets mixed reviews. The 60 pounder always gets the nod.

Try the 10540 Melling Select Pump!!! It is there Hi Perf line! Different design on gears and they are heat treated also!! :-) Best pump out there for the money!! It is one of my biggest sellers! Especialy with the Super Stock guys! We stock them of course along with the regular Melling pumps!

Some food for thought. Your oil pump cannot create pressure. Oil pumps can only create flow. Pressure is created by the oil's resistance to flow and will vary with bearing clearances as well as viscosity and other factors. The majority of aftermarket Pontiac oil pumps with cast bodies all displace approximately the same volume of oil and so will have equal flow. The thing that manufacturers are changing is the pressure relief spring which will limit the total system pressure, giving you your 60 or 80 psi pressure reading. To find the true hi volume oil pumps out there you need to know the GPM (gallons per minute) at a given RPM of the pump and then compare to other pumps.
