Greetings from Norway.
I am posting this in the NON-Pontiac engine forum as well

I have a `84 Buick Electra estate wagon with an Olds 307"...
(I`m sorry...I forgot...You will have to pretend it`s a Pontiac Safari... )
The car is not running well at all.It has a rough idle,and dies on me on intesections.It also performs lousy in the entire RPM range and it definately sounds like I have a exhaust leak.It also felt like it was not running on all cylinders.
Well,I have found an exhaust leak in the LH emission tubes that come out of the head.The pipes goes through a couple of valves and on to the AIR pump beneath the A/C compressor.
(Must be half a mile of vacum hoses an valves all over the engine compartment )
I replaced my spark plugs yesterday,and in doing so,I managed to break of the tube on the RH side just below the valve.
It still has a rough idle,and still dies on intersections.

My thought; Could the apparent exhaust leak in the emission pipes cause this behavior,and if so,Is it possible to remove all of the hoses/pipes and AIR pump,and STILL get the engine to work OK??

Hello. Sorry to hear about your misfortune.

Hopefully your 84' Electra Estate Wagon has more power than my 89' Pontiac Safari. Ironically, mine runs smoothly, but has dreadfully LOW power. I have stopped driving it because of it. Mine also has the Oldsmobile 307 V8. I also had a 1985 Chevrolet Caprice Estate wagon (same car as the Electra Estate/Safari), but it had the Chevrolet 305 V8. It was slow too, but was quicker than my Safari. Bad thing about the Caprice was that it was a big oil burner.

Well,I would prefer the car to run smoothly again..
These full size wagons are very relaxing to drive along the highway...with a mug of coffee in one hand,and the cruise control engaged..Cruising in comfort.
Also You can get almost anyting inside them if needed.
I am not going to give up on her just Yet.Will try to remove the emission components and see what happens.
Worst case scenario :
I`ll keep the wagon,throw the 307" engine away,and put in a LT 1/ 4L60 from a Roadmaster and get double the power and way better gas mileage.

Est.cost is 6.000$....

I would think it would be easy to throw in a 383 gm crate motor no?
Are they hard to come by in your country? There has got to be a 350 layin around somewhere? I would try some simple things first.Have distributor curved and checked. Maybe a cracked cap/bad wires? Forgive me if you went through the easy stuff already. I know those air tubes have check vavles for vacuum in them. I had a jeep granwagoneer who had issues like this and after the emissions pump and all was removed it ran better.
