I got rear ended in mine about a year after I got it. I had driven it to work and was on my way home. Sitting in a line of traffic at a red light with a Jeep SUV behind me. I had glanced up in the rearview mirror for some reason and noticed a very "pained' look on the drivers face. BAM!!!!! He climbed out of the Jeep and apologized. His foot had slipped off of the brake and just touched the throttle and before he could control it had smacked me. I walked around back, scared to look. Turns out the bumper was trashed and the little trim piece in the middle of the trunk lid had the slightest scratch imaginable on it. His insurance replaced the bumper and paid me $90 to install it. It worked out great since the bumper he bent was already dented in a couple of spots and was surface rusted on top of the area where the tailpipes ended.

I wonder what the impact speed was? I've been reading about this in body shop sec. and Dans GTO was parked with his flashers on.

Dan,
That is way more than 6000.00, way more. The only way to repair the car is with a rear section, hopefully this guy in Alabama has a nice rear section. Judging from the damage, it will need both quarters, rear lower body panel, rear upper body panel, deck lid, major floor damage, bumper and major frame work. I would say it's 10,000 to 12,000 here in Florida, so it's probably more where you are.

To do it right will cost a bunch of money.

I hope you had classic car insurance someplace where they will know how much money to get out of his insurance company.

Stuff happens, I am sure he was really sad about the deal. You could have been hit by a young gal who was talking on her cell phone and ran into
you at 60 mph like I was. Unfortunately my buddy who was in the grand Prix immediately behind me took the major impact from the young ladys car.

To do it right you are talking a frame off deal to fix the frame and make it square again, cutting off the rear quarters, trunk, floor pans, and more and more. Don't be surprised if the doors and the front fenders have been tweaked too.

What's up with the California plates.

I will be in Longmont next week. If the car is ready, or even not, I will be happy to take it back home to California.

In fact, I have a nice place, not far from the beach, all picked out for her.

Cool Replies

Mark,

Now you know why I expect to spend my summer "working" with his insurance company - who isn't returning calls now that they have issued their lowball estimate.

Oh, and they are sure that the right rear quarter can be saved.

Tom,

The GTO restorer I had look at it thinks there is "minor" frame damage where the left rear end of the frame was tweaked. However, if you look at the endura front end, the gap to the hood and fenders is no longer uniform by a noticeable amount. And this is after hours and hours were spent realigning the front body panels to ensure proper fit.

The trunk floor is actually in decent shape, but the trunk surround has been rolled over on the inside. The doors open and close fine, but you can see (particularly on the passenger side) where the rear quarter made contact with the door and sprung back.

Karch,

$45,000 and its yours to take with you, as is. Fresh drivetrain has less than 50 miles on it. Hasn't even been back from the restorer long enough to get it registered in Colorado. Or will trade for new C6 convertible.

Dan

Unhappy No Calls? not like L/M.

Dan,
Being an old car, and good real metal, they may be able to save the right......ONLY if you have an old experienced exceptional metal man. You mentioned the endura is not fitting correctly, that could mean the frame has a diamond, although it is one of the easiest frame repairs to do, the tech has to be qualified to perform that repair, and you need good measurement reference points, and a good measurement resource with correct measurements. I would call the adjusters manager and complain, if he does not satisfy you, keep going up the ladder.
EDIT:
If it were me I would get my company involved, that's who I pay, and they have your interest involved. If your company writes a better estimate, let the two insurance companies fight it out, that's why you pay your premium. You can get L/M to forward your deductible, that amount will not be in dispute.

I'm in the middle of a resto with my 70 GTO convertible, and had to replace alot of the sheetmetal. I looked into buying repo panels because they were available and reasonably priced, but was warned against using them because they require ALOT of work just to get them to fit right. The guy who did my body work said he would much rather work with dented, rusted original GM sheetmetal, so I found the doors and trunk lid from a Lemans in the junkyards. The fenders and endura bumper I bought from a guy who had extra parts from his 70. I bought the valance panels new from Ames. They were original GM valances, and this is one time where original GM let me down. The rear valance was nice, but the front valance was junk. The last run of 70 front valances had some issues. The front filler brackets were spot welded in the wrong position, and the panel was bent wrong and doesn't fit correctly where it meets the left fender,(and no, it's not the body work that was done to the fender). I stilll have the original valance panel and it fits nice, and when compared to the NOS panel, you can see how it was bent differently where it meets the fender. The NOS supplier turned the original GM part into a "repro like" piece of garbage. Anyway, I hate to see what happened to your GTO, especially since it was so original. I'm not sure why your attitude was called into question - I know if my GTO was rear ended by someone who shouldn't be driving anymore, I'd be plenty upset. It's time for the old guy to use "Dial a Ride". I don't have much in the way of parts to offer, except for some rear bumper brackets. I have a rear bumper also, but it would need to be rechromed, and I'm not sure if it's perfectly straight. I would be willing to give you the parts - you would just pay for the shipping. If you need the parts, let me know, I would be happy to part with them.

Number one, be happy no-one was hurt. Secondly, be glad your not in California. Should you get rear-ended in my state, the whole car empties and they all run like hell.
All kidding aside, as a previous poster stated, let your insurance company handle it. This will only give you stress and headaches.
Chris.
