I have recently "inherited" a 1970 Grand Prix. I believe the engine rins, but it's part way started on a resto, so it will have to be towed out of where it is.
I know it has a 400, and is an automatic. It has bucket seats so I am assuming it's a j car. The passanger rear quarter is damaged and would need to be replaced. I know pics would help, but I don't currently have any. Let's just assume the worst and it's 2 steps above a basket case. What is this car worth in it's present condition? Thanks, Ted |

It's worth whatever you can get for the engine and trans for the most part. Disc brakes swap onto the A-body cars (GTO etc.), all the suspension pieces will swap too.
I sold a pretty nice '69, knowing full well that the buyer was using the drivetrain and hacking it up to save a '68 GTO. Trunk floor, trans tunnel sheetmetal, gas tank and such all swapped to the Goat. Nobody really wants to pay much for the '69 and up GPs unfortunately, most are used for parts rather than restored. What's it worth? Not much.

If it's got the original heads they would be #13's. You can get $250 out of those alone. Obviously without seeing it it's difficult to say but I would guess more in the $1500 range. Post some pics. If the motor is completely original it's worth $500. Does it have any options on it? According to b-man I need to go to Cal. and bring back some GP's to Ohio.

I sold a 1970 j model with 80,000 miles 400 motor and trans needing paint for $1,800 and the new owner painted the car and got $4,000.It really depends on if it's an J or SJ, if it's a 400 or 455 and what options it has. Please don't sell it to someone who wants to part it out. There are too many people who like Grand Prix's[like me] who would buy it to fix it.

I sold a running, driving '69 J for $1500. Car was straight and 99% rust-free, needed paint and some dash wiring work, interior was fair.
I rebuilt the engine (re-ring, bearings, cam, etc.) and put on new shocks, full 2-1/2" dual exhaust, new radiator, altogether about $2000 invested in a car I got for free. It had jumped the timing chaimn (nylon cam gear) at around 90K miles and bent all the pushrods. I drove it for a year and sold it. I really liked that GP as they are beautiful cars, but I needed it out of my way. Hated to see it get parted and cut up, but once it's no longer mine I really can't do too much about what happens to it. I've seen a few advertised in the paper for cheap, but a man can only have so many projects. Come on out to CA, the rust-free old cars are still here waiting. Basket-case unfinished resto '70 GP, engine might or might not run. Yep, $500 to $1000 tops if someone really wanted it.

I know this is comparing apples to oranges but a 70 GP that needs totally restored just sold for $3000. The car is driveable but not in very good shape. It does have the correct motor...but the biggy...it's a 4 speed.

Actually there were 329 4 speed cars built. I'm sure most of them are gone. I'd still like to seep pics baja. It would make it much easier to estimate.

I am going down with a potential buyer tonight. I haven't seen it in awhile, but I am willing to sell it. All I am really looking to get out of it, is some money to pay for the engine rebuild I am doing on my 65 389. After doing some searches online, I think 2,000 is a fair price.
If he doesn't want it, I'll post some pics. If no one else wants it, I will take the brakes off it for my GTO, pull the enigne for a spare, and get rid of the rest. |
