Hey guys, without too much detail here's the deal. Car won't charge the battery when running, reads 11 volts in the car. I have an external regulated alternator. When I bypass the voltage regulator with a jumper wire, the system charges and the voltmeter in the car reads about 14v. This is a new voltage regulator from Advance. Could it be bad right out of the box? I heard something about shorting a new regulator to ground or something to initially set it. Anyone heard of this? Thanks.

Could be bad out of the box, but first check for corroded or loose wiring, Also check the alternator.

Unplug the connector from the back of the alt and jump the "F" terminal on the alt to the battery positive. Go to a fast idle and measure the alt output voltage, it should be up to about 16 volts at the alt and at the battery if the alt is good.

No, don't short anything to ground with a voltage regulator. Not done on alternator systems for any reason.
