Default 72 formula 400 front grill color

I am restoring a 72 formula 400 and need to know if the plastic front grill should be silver or black (have seen both). The car is red if that matters.
Hope someone can help?

ace770,

The grilles on '72 Formulas should be all silver.

Thank you Jim,

Your knowlege is really helping me with restoration. Hate to bother you but have two more questions. Should the fog light covers be clear or orange? Do you know how rare my formula 400 is? (real production numbers).

Really appreciate your help

ace,

I don't have the production numbers on 1972 Formula 400's, but they are becoming very collectable. They are great looking and perfoming cars. A lot of us here on this site would love to have one our garage.

As far as I can tell the parking lamp lenses were clear on cars built before Jan 1, 1972. Cars after that were built with amber lenses, but there have been some later '72 cars with clear lenses reported on this site. Seems like Pontiac used up whatever clear lenses they had left after Jan 1.

So I could keep the orange lenses on my 72 and be somewhat correct? I used 73 ones as my 72 had ratty clear ones. I do like the orange better. Never knew the info said, thanks.

bird72,

You could because keep the amber lenses because both could be considered correct.
