So with my new 541 going in the Goat, I decided to add a Trans brake to the TH400. Oviously the stock drive shaft will need to be addressed. I already upgraded the yokes last year when I put in the new 12 bolt.
So should I get a new steel , moly or aluminum one. Cost is not an issue Thanks in advance . Oh yeah, the car weighs 3580 with my butt in it.

After breaking mine I installed a Mark Wiilliams bonded aluminum shaft. They also sell carbon fiber. Call and get a catalogue. I think you may find price can be an issue (at least to some of us). They have real nice stuff.

I ran a 4" aluminum one behind my 400, and I'm running a 3" chrome moly behind my 482. Car weight is about 3500.

Go with the 3" Chromoly tube, not the one with the welded seam in it.
No need for the Aluminum or CF, unless you are looking for that last .005 - .01 sec, like they do in Comp or PS.

Denny's Driveshafts did well for me. Quality, costs, included the 1350 U-Joints & TH400 Yoke....and nice paint(like a powdercoat).

We've used Strange driveshafts with 1350 u-joints. The 4-speed had a steel shaft...no problems. When we changed to the 5-speed, we got a chromemoly shaft. Again, no problems. They are very rugged and abuse-resistant.
I agree with post # 5 about aluminum and CF. |

Aluminum is light but has its limits. Carbon fiber is twice the cost of aluminum. Go with a chrome moly unit from Strange Engineering and you will never have any problems no matter how heavy your car is or how much horsepower you make.

I don't think that Denny's would even sell you an aluminum (6061 or MMC) for a full size car with a brake. He seemed real interested in the safety of what he sold me when I did mine. Takes it sorta personal.
They were GREAT to deal with. Not just some guy at an order desk, but either Denny or Daniel (his son). that's it.

Just picked up my driveshaft from Denny's a few week's ago. Top notch quality, great people to deal with and the best customer service, always helpful! Denny and his son do take great pride in there work!
He will recommend his nitrous ready shaft unless your under 2800lbs. or somewhere around there. That's if I remember correctly from when I was at his shop ordering mine. |

I purchased an aluminum driveshaft from Precision Shaft Technologies (http://www.pstds.com), and highly recommend them. After making a few measurements (TH-400 conversion), and a few minutes on the phone, my new shaft arrived the same week. The quality is superb and the customer service on the phone was great. They use seamless 6061-T6 aluminum and will install whatever u-joints you want. I went with a 1350 front U-joint and a 3R rear (to fit my 10-bolt yoke), both cryogenically treated. The balance is great, the welds are all computer made, and the fit was exact. I think I paid somewhere around $460. My weight is maybe 100-200 lbs more than yours, but I’m not running a trans brake. Give them a call and with your specs. I bet a larger 4” aluminum shaft would be fine, but see what they say first.
If you want a chromoly shaft, Denny's offers a nitrous ready driveshaft with a lifetime warranty. If you twist the shaft like a pretzel, they'll send you a new one. |

Ive been using a Mark Williams 3.5" / 1350 shaft with billet yokes for years on my GTO. Cars with manual transmissions and big motors are particularly tuff on driveshafts and I wouldnt even think about an aluminum shaft in my car. Pay attention to the RPM vs length vs material/dia issues as well.

We ran an aluminum driveshaft for a little while in our former 600 HP "Pool Car" at Ford. A Little While! Hint Hint.

Got a denny's nitrous ready driveshaft here with the billet 1350 style yokes. It's a piece of art. Very nicely done and i'll never break it.

http://www.markwilliams.com/driveshafttech.aspx Like I posted earlier, I chose the 3.5" MMx shaft for a non-brake application. The main reason was for the RPM potential. My drive shaft was just a tick under 60" long. I didn't have room for a 4" shaft, and carbon fiber does not appeal to me, so there was really only one choice left. I was a little scared when I thought about my factory shaft being more than 1000 RPM over critical speed! No wonder the car shook at the top end. It's as smooth as glass now.
