the engine is a tempest 4 cylinder. P-600 blower(shoul make about 18#boost), air/water intercooler and 100hpn2o. what do you guys think it will run? oh yah, it's got a 389crank and a v8 roller cam. guessing it will come in around 2200# race weight.

I had thought about doing pretty the same thing with the tempest 4 cylinder I got in my garage, the idea was to maybe go "whup up on" those new fangled hi-tech rice mobiles.

Also debating doing an early ford rod project with it too.

Or a FED or altered...

Decisions,,,decisions,,,already got two,no wait, three projects in line ahead of the tempest 4 cyl. project, but I do know where a couple more motors are, thinking about grabbing those as spares.

I think those half a V-8/4 cylinders are the coolest motors!!!

Good luck and keep us posted Brad.

A V-8 cam?? I thought that would not work. Very cool combo. I will say it should run low tens.

Oh yeah, time predictions,,,well,,,you really did'nt give all that much detail on the combo,,,and I'm not much of a boost expert,,,but if you can make 300 HP on the motor, adding 18 Lbs. of boost should get you to appx. 650 HP or so according to the wallace racing boost calculator.

650 Hp in a 2200 lb. package would net high 8 second potential according to the wallace racing weight/Hp calculator (8.75 @ 153.1 mph to be precise).

Then add the 100 shot of nitrous, and the resulting 750 Hp should get you into low 8 second territory (8.34 @ 160.6 mph).

So ask me,safe bet it'll be in the nines, then after it gets all sorted out and dialed in and such,8 second potential should be there, assuming all is right.

Again, good luck and keeps us up to date!

How did they get the 389 crank to work, what's on the crank to take up the space of the missing 4 rods? I thought a v8 cam wouldn't work because of the different firing order. screamingchief, I'm also looking at taking the entire drivetrain out of a '62 Tempest wagon that we have and putting it into a deuce frame, should make a very different type of ratrod.

Brad explained it all before,to use the V-8 cam you need to use the V-8 crank, this matches the firing pulses and makes it work,I'm sure he'll fill all here in on the details.

I believe they used some cut off "dummy" rods for the extra rod journal space and help with the balance issues.

Yeah,I figured an early ford rod would be a pretty straight forward project, have lots of ideas how to make it unique and such,ya'll know, give it some pontiac flavor!!!

I'm thinking of using a modified wenzler tunnel ram (w/the LH runners cutoff and the plenum welded up) then use dual holley 2300 2bbls. mounted sideways up-top ala' split dominators on a V-8,then a fogger system for some "kick" when needed.

I'll include my "super double top secret" spy shot of the photo mock up of that for sh!ts and grins...

Do you have any pics on the "slave rods" or info on how they were made, what type of transmission and starter setup is being used? Thanks. screamingchief that's going to be a cool looking intake, I'm leaning towards using 1/2 of a log manifold with 3 97's or early Holleys.

I can't wait to see it run. I am very curious to see how using a V8 crank and cam are going to work vs the 4cyl flat crank and cam.I like the modified Gutsram on the last post. That would probably work a lot better than the modified Victor manifold I was using. I had poor fuel distribution with it.

I dunno,,,why do you ask Rusty?

You still got that sheetmetal 4-71 blower intake???

That intake you had is kinda what gave me the idea for considering something like the one in the photo mock-up,that was a slick piece!!!

I still got the pics of that sheetmetal blower intake somewhere in my saved pontiac info.

The pic I posted was just me playing around with the idea, kinda thinking visually care of some photo software.

Right now any price is too much for me,,,broke as can be...

I just liked the wenzler/2300 holley idea for the reason white warrior mentioned, even fuel distribution,I felt this would be almost like having webers for each cylinder, just cheaper and easier to tune.

And with a large fogger unit, the even fuel distribution would be a big plus!

I've also contemplated using two stages, first a small shot from a pair of plates under the holley 2bbls,and then a bigger shot from the foggers.

I dunno, would help a bunch if I could win the mega-millions tonight,or Texas Lotto tomorrow night...

I heard this car run, it sounds like a Nitro harley! meanest sounding four banger i've ever heard! "Little chief " should give the ricers a run for there money! Brad will find out if this "experimental" engine combo works, as he will push it to the limits! it will run,or it'll come home in a basket!

Hmmm... 4.25 crank 231 inches(more with sleeves/additional stroke)(anyone want to cut a bank off an aftermarket block for 270 cubes??) - roller cam - KRE highport head-Victor/Dominator(with 1/2 side made inactive) all in a light car... Mini Pro Stock???

if it all works out, that is the plan, a 4.25 stroke(will have to add room to the side of the block) and a 4.18 bore with an eld head. the slave rods are cut off like to rod caps bolted together. the engine was balanced as a v8. i got all the interior and cage painted yesterday, now to put it all back together and start wiring. can't wait to hear it run with a real ignition system. was runing on just a stock HEI unit. the starter pad was added to the block by way of nickle rod and welding. then dril and tap acordingly. tranny right now is a power glide,if needed it will be a TH400. home mad adapterlates used as a mid plate. this same combo with out an intercooler(be it in a V8-406') went 6.00@116mph in my bird 3500# back in 1999. that's about 900hp. i think it will make about 700hp when it is all said and done, maybee more.

Screamingchief, Yes I do still have the blower intake. If you mill part of the top plate off, you could make a nice tunnel ram out of it also. And Yes I do have an intake just like your picture. It is a Wenzler that I cut off the one side and welded it closed. I was going to put a Bird catcher hat on it, and make a fuel injection. Instead I decided on the 4-71 blower, and am glad I did. Makes a ton of power. Thank's Rusty

Hmmmm,I'd be real interested in seeing some pics of what you did with the wenzler,,,if that's not asking too much.

Funny you mention the injector hat too,I had thought about a similar deal using the hilborn "4-port" style injection set-up,but again that stuff can be a bit pricey for my budget these days,so I try to think of ways to get the desired effect for less.

Your pics and white warriors pics and others here like Brad's keep my 4cyl. project alive in my mind, justifies my letting it take up space in the garage and such, when it could just as well be some other piece of hardware.

It sits there just waiting it's turn in the project line-up...

Yep,just sitting there waiting for me to decide what the he!! I'm gonna build to put it in???

car moved on it's own power today!!! tested the converter against the brake. went to 4500 rpm, with 10#of boost. this trany and converter went 5500rpm behind a BBC on alcohol that made about 850HP in a dragster. i think about 650HP is within grasp. thanks agin for the support. will post some picts from the driveway.
