Default mini starter needed and exhaust work

This is on my 64 Gp.

I just back back from the muffler shop. Tight squeeze for the drivers side exhaust pipe, by the starter. The damn pipe is touching the starter. No other way to do it according to the muffler man.

It looks like I'm going to need a mini starter. Does PY carry them. Any onfo out there? I'll post some pics of the tight squeeze, but for now I have this.

Default Thanks pitt

This guy is an older guy that has always done mufflers. He pushed the other guys out of the way on this job. He even had a finger brace on when I went back. Apparently one of the pipes crashed it. A little more bloodletting getting this thing together.

I went with dual DynoMax, quieter than Flows according to the guys. Slight downturns at the rears.

I made sure they used hangers. I put that request upfront. Keep the welders away from the frame.

Default Good eye EE

It's in the trunk for now. I'll get it connected to intake manifold vacuum before moving it.

Fresh TH400 in there, have not moved it since the crossmember refab. I only backed it out of the driveway and straightened the car out for the flatbed.

We had to cut the old pipes out and the stubbies that were left made quite a racket, and shot flames.

Next it goes to get the front and back glass stainless reset.

Default Longbranch

After looking at the pics, it looks like it would be the best switch. I'll go with the stock manifolds for now and search for some repop longbranches.

I also told them, at the muff shop, that they were stuck with me now. They were recommended by my glass guy, and they gave me the "good guy" discount.

I also told them that they wanted to make this car sound good, so that I could tell people where I got the work done.

There are not very many of these cars left and people do notice it. I'm hoping to drive it to the Pomona Swap meet on Sunday. I haven't seen any 64 Gp's there in the 3-4 years that I have been working on this sled.

Take care,
Greg

Thumbs up

Greg,

Call me @ 626-333-4395 for a smokin deal on a IMI mini-starter, just like the ones that I use.

Les

Know hte feeling. They flattened the pipe on the starter side on my '66 wagon, & you might be able to slide something between. I am going to put a new starter in when I pull the engine hopefully in the next couple of weeks to change RMS & oil pan. Has not caused a problem surprisingly even in summer heat & 1000 mile trip. Thing makes a funky noise when it spins down after a start like a bearing is bad. Looks to be the original one.

A good mini-starter would be the answer. Even then I would consider protecting the solenoid from the heat with a heat shield. If "hot start" problem raises its ugly head then consider the "Ford Solenoid" solution. Also big, hefty battery cables will help tremendously in avoiding the heat soak situation.

in my experience, the ford solenoid's a waste of time or at best a stop gap fix.

use a set of 1 guage cables, a good battery [1000cca] and wrap the starter if needed.

i've not had to wrap a starter since using this set up and rarely have hot start issues.

Default update

The front and rear glass surrounds are set.

I'm going to IMI to get a mini starter tomorrow.

There were cheaper mini-starters at the Pomona swap meet today, but I passed on them.

If Les, (Wheelspin) has three of them and offerd a personal recommendation, I'm doing it.

Thanks Les, PY, and the board help with this one.

Take care,
Greg

Default IMI Mini Starter!

I picked up the IMI mini starter today. I have not installed it yet, but it looks like a quality unit. I was able to get a really good price, just as Les suggested.

They seem like a good bunch of guys, and they had the starter set aside for my will call. They also inquired if it was for a points or HEI car and made sure I got the right (points) one.

It's stamped IMI on the billet, connector end and Jack assured me that it was a lifer.

Thanks all,
Greg
