Default Finally on the road!

Got the wagon out of the transmission shop today. 2004R shifts were crisp but it lugs in 4th at about 50-54 mph. Should be expected with the "mom's wagon" differential. I'll just keep it in 3rd 'til I'm up to speed on the freeway and look for a new punkin'. Still, I got rubber leaving the first stoplight without trying. Did my best to keep it under 50 with a very brief run up to 60. This wagon is going to be a fun ride. 488 miles to go and I'll see what she'll do on the Coast Highway. Smiling. KW

The hardest part will be keeping the speed down until the 421 is run-in. I'm also going to perform the water-pump mod discussed in the Street forum to get the operating temp down. The trannie man said it was running hot, but it was fine all the way home. Probably should put in a temp gage.

Temp guage is an EXCELLENT idea - don't trust the idiot lights.
Also, the motor will run hotter during the break-in period.
Good luck and have fun.

i'm glad to hear you've the beast on the road, once you get the bugs worked out of it the enjoyment begins.

guages are a great addition to any of these old cars.

That is a cool picture of that beast at the strip. What water pump mod are you talking about? What is the thread titled?

Great job KW! I know you are psyched.

3.08 is a nice gear in these wagons. I changed to that & was pleased. Not as pricey as the 3.42 & lower.

As yours goes on the road mine is coming off. Got the majority of the parts to do the 4 speed conversion on mine from a member today. Lacking clutch parts, B/U switch Brkt & a couple of little Hdwe items. As soon as I get my flywheel I will be talking to Brad at Fabcraft.

Show us some smoking tire Pics for inspiration after the 500 miles!

If you eliminate that A/C duct/clock you can put the factory 3 gauge pod in. Food for thought.

The water pump efficiency mod thread is in the Heating and Cooling forum entitled something like "chalk one up for the cast iron impeller" Link below.

So what I need is minimun clearance between the divider plate and the impeller? I hate reading that much.

Default water pump mod

It takes some time to wade through all posts on that topic because it's so popular. Clearance needs to be .1 or less. Many pumps come out of the box with a gap between the impeller and the plate of as much as .25. Use a hammer, take your time, measure. That pretty much sums up the 895 posts on that thread. Most are testimonials of members who have had success. It's worth scanning the thread for the exactly where-and-how-to photos. Post # 773 on page 7 and post # 14 on page 45 have the best. Thanks to Ultimate Warrior George Kujanski for the original post. By the way, he jokingly asks for $2 from every member who lowers his engine operating temp with this mod. From the testimonials, he should be able to take a vacation with the proceeds.

Congratulations on getting your 421 on the road! I am a week or two behind on my 421 - still need to add the guages and install the fan and radiator. Where is Summerland?

Summerland overlooks the Pacific Ocean on US 101 between Carpinteria and Santa Barbara, CA, about 80 mile north and west of LA. 84 degrees yesterday. The town is so small and hilly there is no home delivery of mail. You have to go to the post offcie to pick it up.

MJ62car, if you haven't done so already, recommend you check your water pump's impeller gap as discussed below before you get the fan and radiator in and fill the cooling system. I wish I had done so. Keep moving forward!

I knew the name (Summerland) was familiar, but I couldn't place it. My stepdaughter lives in Santa Barbara. After I get mine sorted out and an adjustable timing control (my tuning is set for 5,000') installed I may try a drive to Santa Barbara.
Thanks for the heads up on the water pump. I put in a new high flow one and had my engine builder verify the gap. I do not want overheating. I also had the radiator cleaned and rodded before I put it back.
Putting the guages in is almost more of a PITA than than the rest. I am installing all mechanical guages in an instrument pod that replaces the clock and center AC vent on the dash. But I want to be able to monitor everything in the begining.
