Well, I found a new project yesterday. '64 Hardtop. It's been sitting in a garage since '84. Looks like I'll be leaning on you '64 and '65 owners for lots of help trying to put this basket case together over the coming years. Anyone care to decode the trim tag in the first pic? I know what I think it means, but looking for some confirmation. And yes, I've got the PHS, but they don't exactly jive. Pics to follow:
The trim tag pic is a little hard to read so hears the text: 04D STYLE 64-2237 KC 3403 BODY TRIM 215 FF PAINT E 2KLPR 3B 5NW Last edited by ron cozzo; 05-12-2007 at 11:04 AM. |

Car was made in Kansas City about a week after my car.
5N says the car is most likely a real GTO. Car had a bunch of options. What is the code under the passenger head on the front of the block? Car might have been a 4 bbl car as the tri-power center carb looks like a 2 bbl tempest linkage car. The code will say for sure. A Lot of work there but it looks like you have a start on a good project car. Not great but good. Tom V.

Not originally a tripower car. Code on block is 78X (4bbl MT). Date on block is D14, pretty close to the build date, probably original. I'll take a closer look at the carbs when I get them home. The intake was the correct 9775088, and the carbs had the correct tags on them, but that's as far as I checked. This is my first tripower, so there's a lot to learn there.
Regarding this being a good, not great start. Yes, I understand. There were just too many nice parts there to walk away from it. Rust free hood and trunk lid, nice fenders, nice doors, two front bumpers, etc. Unfortunately the custom sport steering wheel and console are MIA. The upper body seems sounds, dash, firewall, rockers, rear tail panel, window channels all look workable. Looks like quarters, wheelhouses, floors and a frame swap will do the body. We'll see.

Looks like a challenge Ron. The rear springs are sagging way to far. Frame problem??

Yes, I'm assuming the frame is gone in the spring seat area. I only had one jack with me, which wasn't enough to see that area. Won't know for sure until I pull it out of there.

It's good you got the hood and tripower setup. the rust is no problem. I'd take it to redi strip there and the electrolytic alkaline process would blow all the rust off and make it clean. Looks like it was an AC car and you have the parts in boxes. You can save some work and block that off if you want. There are good clean western frames in yards out west. I bought one for one of my 64's. Not sure if I'll use it or not. Original frame is rust free, but needs the front lower link brackets welded back on (someone cut them off), and I'm sure the cross member will be cracked when I get the body off (typical cracking on passenger side form body torque and no reinforcement brackets.
