I'm sure this has been asked countless times on this board.

I'm looking for a good all around gun that can take care of putting on a dp-40 coat as well as taking care of all the little parts that will need detailing.
It seems a hvlp is the way to go. any suggestions??

Also I'd like a recommendation for all the necessary components from the compressor to the gun.

I plan on reading more and doing a lot of practice.

Ya, Satas are good. Id check into some LVLPs...less overspray, less air requirements. Iwata makes one, Sharpe does, Astro, Im sure theres others coming out soon also.

almost any brand name gun will give you good results, I have also used some harbor freight knock offs with good results. Devilbiss, Binks, Sata, Sharpe, all make good guns.

hvlp require a larger compressor, I think you would like the sata rp line.

Actually you can use the same compressor for HVLP or siphon feed guns. AN HVLP gun pressurises the cup and uses very low tip pressure, a siphon feed uses air volume to pick the paint up from the cup.

I've been looking around a bit. What's a decent price range for my needs? They seem to vary in price from $75-$500.
I'm not going to use it every day, but I want one that I will be happy with for years as a restorer. I don't plan on painting bodies other than prime, but I will use it for engine compartment, interior, suspension parts, crossmembers, etc.

For priming and small parts you don't need anything too fancy. I'd been using a HF 43430 HVLP (~$40) for about a year to spray epoxy primer - I'm pleased with it but it does use quite a bit of air. This isn't really an issue when priming in pieces or doing small parts.

I recently bought an Astro EVO 4014 (LVLP) to shoot BC/CC with and am very pleased with it. This thing uses a lot less air and sprays out better than my HF gun. I'd suggest this gun (~$80) to anyone on a budget. If you plan on spraying high build I'd pick up an EVO 4018 as well.

Just got back from the paint store. They suggested a Warwick 904H
Anyone use this gun. It's an LVLP

$140 for the kit with the gun, regulator, tip and an aluminum cup.

I have heard of several people that have those Astro LVLP guns and are happy with them. I saw a place the other day that sells both guns (the 1.4 tip and the 1.8) in a set for $148 and free shipping. Here is the link...........

I run a Devilbiss gravity feed and am not sorry. It was pricy, yet you cannot beat the "baggie system" as it makes clean-up a breeze!! With the baggie, you can turn the gun up-side down and not make a mess!! Years ago, I started with a $40.00 gun from Sears-Robuck and went to a suction Sharpe HVLP gun which worked great and just went to the Devilbiss kit(which included a small "jam gun") and 2 extra spray tips(size) and bags and it works great $400.00. I seem to be able to lay my best paint when you want to be hugging the air-conditioner. Just remember, you get what you pay for!! I would recommend working with you local paint store as you may run into an issue with a new gun and returns will be easier. Besides the advice is priceless!! Good-luck!!
