Default E-bay dealing with shill bidders - Finally...

It's still 'transparent' to most but with ebays new 'bidder 1' 'bidder 2' etc system its finally easier to see whats going on. Purely as an example

go check out:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...m=140122880106

Then click on number of bids link (currently 22)

Once on that screen click on the Bidder Detail 'View' hyperlink for Bidder 8, 7, 6 etc. The key statistic on that next screen is % of bids associated with current seller. In this case we see 46% 50% etc.

hmmmmmmmmmm

Shill action? I'm no expert but looks shaky to me especially when bidder 1 and 2 (i.e. likely actual, real bids) show 0% associated with seller.

I like the current ebay set up. 10 years too late but better late then never.

Ebay is a joke now with all the shill bidding and the bogus auctions. How about the naked women on the hoods of cars in some GTO ads? Cat houses I guess.

Personally, I can't understand anybody who feels compelled to be the top bidder at any given time (or every given time). Wait until the end, if it's in your budget - bid! If not, wait until the next one comes around.

Yep, the Ebay collector car ads are a joke. Believe me, shill bidding still goes on, maybe not to the extent as before, but it is still easy to get your 'buddies' to help you get up the price of a car you are trying to sell. The problem is that Ebay has become a venue of 'bottom feeders' where everyone thinks everyone else is out to scam them and everyone wants something for nothing. Anyone who has an idea of selling a good car on Ebay is crazy. You may get some good leads, but don't count on selling it at auction.

I agree. Some of them have delusions that ebang is an extension of Barret Jackson or some other high dollar auction house. I think some of this is also spreading to the parts and accessories as well. Two words of advice: Buyer Beware!

Missed the reserve by $1.00

I guess Bidder #8 didn't want it that badly.

that percentage has nothing to do with that. My friend is bidding on a car on ebay and has never had any transaction with the seller and his is 50%.

I think bidding on a car on ebay for anything over 5000.00 is insane. I sold my old wagon for $1800 there last year and it was a smooth transaction. Now if it were an $18000 car I would have gone the route of hemmings, cctol, and other publications. Most scum dont take the time to read. Ebay is good to see pictures of a certain model but if it is not close enough to put your hands on its not worth it in my opinion.

The way I see those percentages, he placed 13 of the total 20 bids, which means he placed 65% of the bids. I don't think that stat is supposed to show he bid on 65% of that guys auctions or anything else but this one auction. Like the first and only guy to bid was 100%, then after a second bidder the first guy dropped to 50% and so forth. Right?

So if no one "seriously" considers ebay where would one list a car on the internet? I had my 69 Lemans listed on ebay a few weeks ago and had 1,200 views 51 watchers and only one bid that did not reach the reserve (which was only 10% above the starting bid). Now I can understand someone not wanting to pay that much but I need to sell a couple of cars and would like to know where best to honestly advertise.

Tell me about it.... I have a BMW 535xi on consignment at my shop... no one wants to even come close to retail on this car. I get only wholesalers who want to steal the car....

I bought my car on ebay and can say that I will NEVER do that again. I have over twice the purchase price invested to bring the car to the level that I thought I paid for.

I disagree, I've bought several of my cars on eBay and have never had a bad experience (so far!!)

Here is how I shop;

1... study the photos carefully, and read the description carefully, looking for any sly wording that indicates the seller is trying to mislead you.

2... avoid all dealers!! Not because they are necessarily crooks but because you want to talk to the owner.

3... my discussion with the owner by phone is vital, I am more interested in reading him then I am about the car. Do I like the history of ownership, do I believe it? Do I trust him? If not run don't walk, period.

4... Ironically my best buys came from listings with lousy photos! That scares off other bidders and as I mentioned I put more emphasis on my read of the seller.

5... A long term owner with a poorly executed listing is a good sign.

6... Once I decide I want the car I decide what the absolute maximum I want to pay for it and bid exactly that amount with a few seconds left in the auction. And you reduce a run up against your bid by other bidders who don't use this technique.

That way who cares about fake bids etc.

Hopefully none of you will listen to me ;-)

I agree with North. The research is vital. I purchased a one owner, original paint, numbers matching, 71 455 HO car on ebay and it was a wonderful and smooth transaction after talking to the owner on the phone. The owner took some terrible pictures, so there was not much interest opn ebay. In fact his first picture, the one that shows up in the thumbnail in on the search results, was of a dirty aftermarket floor mat.
