Default 1971 GTO

have a 71 GTO Convertible w/ Console Auto. Problem is; when I start the car the key stays in the start position thius keeping the bendix engaged. To disengage I have to shift out of park, then the key goes to the run position. How do I fix this? I installed a new shifter cable and it worked fine for about a week then this?

That sounds like a column problem. Cable shouldn't have anything to do with it. If all of your linkages are there, when you shift out of park, you're rotating the column collar which must be rubbing on the ignition switch rod. By rotating the column it's taking the binding pressure off the rod and letting the spring kick the rod back. I'd start by disconnecting the shift rod from the column in the engine compartment then unplug the ignition switch wiring. Turn the key to start in park, see if it's still binding, then turn the collar and turn the key to start again. you need to narrow down where the problem is. See if it sticks in all collar locations etc. (could be a sticky lock cylinder, ignition switch or bent actuating rod)

Good luck!
