I'm trying to replace the rear axle studs from stock to 2 7/8 long studs for slicks. '79 Z28 8.5 10 bolt w/stock studs. I have the 0.480 knurl studs but the beveled area just before the knurl seem almost too big for the stock holes. Is this the correct size or do I need to drill out the holes? If so, what size drill bit? Thanks guys. This is also in the brake, rear susp. section but wanted a faster reply. Mark L

I went to longer studs on my front wheels to be NHRA compliant. I ordered the .480 3in studs and they were slightly too big to pull through. I took them down to the machine shop and had them drill the holes slightly bigger and press them. Cost me about $30 to have both rotors done.

If you are going racing I'd highly recommend going to 1/2" studs. IIRC the smallest knurl on those are .531 which would require drilling axles and drums.

28 spline c clip axles is another thing to concider if using slicks. It's only a matter of time when you break them not if you break them. Not pretty when it happens. I sure wouldn't want to be running 100 mph and have an axle vacate. Chuck
