When insuring a classic car, are you required to use 'antique' or 'Classic Car' license plates? Are you limited in annual mileage? Can anyone make any positive recommendations for an insurance carrier? Haggerty?

I pay a little over $200 a year for my 1968 GTO with insured value of $28,000. No deductible. 2,500 year milage limit. Must be in locked garage when not "in use". No drag racing at all.

- Must be in a locked garage (ok to not be in locked garage at Car Events like the National Meet)

- modifed vehicles much higher premium (any deviation from stock is considered modified)
- Cannot drive to work
- Must be in private locked garage
- Excellent track record on claims
- No appraisal needed unless Agreed Value exceeds their guides

- No errands, shopping or driving to work




Condon and Skelly
- Agreed Value (several options)
- must be garaged
- cannot use for work or shopping etc
- must be stock, not modified

whether you have classic/antique or regular plates should have nothing to do with getting classic car insurance. In CT if you have antique plates the property tax is cheaper.

I got a set of original (brand new) plates from 1977. When I went to the DMV in NY state they said the words HISTORIC must be on the insurance card in order to register the car with the old plates. I use American Collectors, they had no problem faxing me a new insurance card.

That is not quite correct. Grundy states: "Collector vehicles must be used for show, hobby, and pleasure purposes only."
What that means is, it must not be your daily driver. They will ask for information about your daily driver before approving insurance for your classic car. You are still welcome to that Sunday cruise...

I've used Haggerty for many years. $180 a year for my 1969 GTO. They have excellent customer service.

I called Hagerty to inquire about any mileage restrictions and the guy on the phone was completely down to earth and very easy to deal. It's like they get it. Let's just pray that they don't farm out their customer service to India! :doh:

Every time I've called them or had questions via email they responded quickly and professionally. I've had only good experiences with them. How many company's can you say that about?

I've heard only good things about both Hagerty and Grundy. I went with Grundy because they had no problem insuring a pro-street car. Hagerty wouldn't touch it with a ten-foot pole.

Im also insured with American Collectors, which is the American Bankers Insurance Company based in Florida. The agreed value us about 12K, I am paying $110.00/year. Soon I will have a Dude 455 in there with maybe a blower following. I have a couple of questions.

1. SHould I have the car appraised or just speak with the insurance company to raise the value of the car.
2. Should I switch companies.

The insurance card says "Historical" because I got a license plate from 1977 and had it registered, but far as I know there is no restiction on driving as long as it is not a daily driver.

QBall, makes no difference on plates/insurance in Illinois. The antique plates are much cheaper (like $30 for 5 years). Also, if you run antique plates, you can use a vintage Illinois plates (does not have to match your AV plate number) identical to your car year as long as you keep the AV plate with you in the car.

I'm also insured with Haggerty. Have been for a couple of years, but so far I haven't had to use the insurance:) . They are easy to work with and are knowledgable folks. I'm an insurance agent myself and none of my companies are this experienced with classic autos.

I've had Condon & Skelly since 1992. No claims so can't comment on that. Their customer service seems OK. Increasing coverage requires photos be sent in via snail mail.

I have American Collectors also. Had a windshield claim last year, Fast service no problem.

Tripower, I copied this right from the Sec of States website, I don't see where it says that you have to run an Vintage Illinois plate. I think that you can run a Vintage plate from any state.

"Historical License Plates, representing the model year, may be displayed on an antique vehicle, provided the owner has valid, current Antique Vehicle Plates. Plates and registration must be kept in the vehicle at all times."
