This car was number 9 per VIN and remained at Peter Toth dealer showroom in Pontiac MI as reported by seller for just under one year.
Looking over a PHS copy I have for this 72 Lemans 455 auto with endura option I found these questions; Anyone know what a 6501 entry is listed on PHS under Description column (second from the bottom)? It has 9D in column under Code. Just below that is CRR HD-178 in description column then 9 D again in code column. First column has 4% MST, CC 21197, Over 6 Months, $3000.oo. Did they discount the car for depreciation? Any help is appreciated. PHS attached. |

You should check and see if there is not a second phs sheet on youre car.My car has two sheets and the same 9d code and a number similar to youre cc21197that I believe means company car (not possitive).

So how come it is not on the sheet you posted? That is what I thought was that it was mandatory and according to the option sheets you posted some time ago it was listed there. Just thought the HO option on your sheet was pretty cheap.

Not sure who Peter Toth is but there never was a Peter Toth Pontiac in Pontiac, Michigan that I remember and the address listed (Hempstead Street) is in a residential neighborhood. The dealers at that time would have been the PMD Retail Store, McMullen Pontiac and Packer Pontiac.

RA option was not mandatory in 71, that is why it isn't on the one Lloyd posted, since that car was a 71.

Ahhhh.....Missed the '71. Yes in '71 the only required option w/455HO was dual exhaust. Nothing else. '72, well that was a different story.......Sure glad mine is a '71 LOL
And the GTO included the endura nose. Okay, Got it.

Looking at the invoice, besides the CC memo (company car), there's no traditional zone-dealer billing. Zone 350...dealer 001, no way.... zones were like 1 to twenty something. The 350, 001 is some form of internal billing. Customer is some form of high GM exec.

Does anybody remember Demitrie Toth, that used to be in all the Mags with his early SD car? I think him and his old man were Pontiac employees.

I have a December 1971 built 72 GTO with a September 1972 PHS - I don't have the additional codes on mine however.
Sales were slow in 1972!

Jeff,
The car was ordered for Peter Toth. The address you see on the PHS is probably his home address. There were no dealers in Pontiac with that name and it was probably ordered thru the Pontiac Retail Store which was in Downtown Pontiac. When that closed down Most of the employees went to Packer Pontiac to get there vehicles delivered. If you look at the bottom left area above the address it looks like something relating to a five percent charge which could have been what the monthly paymen was back then for a company lease vehicle. Give me a call and I can go over it with you. |

Thanks for the offer, Brian.
Correct, this was a PMD employee, and Pontiac used this form when cars were sold to employees as well. The 9D codes are internal billing codes just like any chart of accounts in bookkeeping. The other entries show generic type sales info like you would have on a auto sales contract. What is interesting is said car was some type of FACTORY EXHIBITION or SHOWROOM CAR and supposed to have a PHS history doc as well. Not sure if this is correct verbage, but will post soon as I receive. It sat somewhere for almost a year before being sold to Mr. Toth. This is about dead on what the seller said, and recall he said it was parked inside at PMD somewhere maybe a entrance/lobby. Anyone ever been to any old PMD building (main admin. maybe) or seen pictures, know about display history, and is this feasible? I thought I ran PHS as I always do, but after looking through big stack I have I couldnt find so ran. Seller had sent me his copy early in deal. I put this info on fax to PHS. Jim Mathison called and said he found the first one after a search. He also provided some info regarding my questions earlier in post. FTR: We are really lucky to have this service, and will say that JM has always been very generous when asked to help. His knowledge and experience is vast and he is a asset to this hobby. Jim traced over the bad copy before faxing. The first copy showing exhb. car had to be mailed. I will post when I receive. Thanks Jim for the help! |

Just received the mail as copies were poor for faxing.
Three PHS docs with this car....see what you all can dechiper. First one lists: SHOW CAR POOL shipped on 12-03-71 Second one lists: FACT CC (or OO) CAR shipped on 12-14-71 Third one in first post/ sold to employee. Anyone know what the second one is? |

I took a drive down Hemstead Street tonight. It is actually in a suburb of Pontiac called Auburn Hills, though the City of Pontiac is right across the street. As is the Auburn Pontiac Dealership which was called Packer Pontiac in the day. I'd be very suprised if the address in question was a PMD bigshot as the house is very modest. Adding to the mystery?
