I built a 312 Ford for a customer with a 57 T-bird[Iknow, not a Pontiac but I'm getting there]. Since the newer rope seals suck, we chose to get a rubber lip seal. We ordered on and when I went to install it I noticed that it said 360 Dodge on the application chart. I questioned it and they told me that was all that was available for the 312 and that is what everyone uses. Hogwash! It burned up and leaked right away because the seal surface on the 312 crank is roughly .050 larger than the 360 Dodge.

We then searched the internet and found someone selling a lip seal specially made for the 312 Ford by Best Gaskets[the same people making the graphite rope seal]. We bought it for $47 and put it in. Everything fit fine. It leaked just as bad as the Dodge seal!

I called Don at DCI and explained the situation and he told me that there are only two rope seals used for everything that uses a rope seal and Pontiac uses both of them. I kind of thought as much but never actually heard that before. We purchased the 455 seal and put it in. What an awesome rope seal! The thing was easy to cut and install. The customer called us back and said it doesn't leak at all now!

I would recommend this seal for anyone, they are great! Thanks Don for the great headache relief! You should hook up with Excederin! LOL!:D

Ace I never received a call from you. Or if you called you never left a message. I always return my calls or e-mails, as you know or should know we are very busy. I cannot always answer the phone especially when I am in the middle of an engine assembly. Way to easy to forget where you left off. Sorry about the miscommunication if I dropped the ball.

Dude, check out engine builder magazine Dec-07 for a how to article on machining for a Ford diesel truck seal. Rope would be easier of course and necessary if its an older stovebolt with the shimmed mains. Never the less an interesting read with Pontiac possibilities. That's where I saw it.

But Best makes one for the 235 and got it coming without all those mods they do. Like they said. It's freakin heavy to move around for straight 6. LOL.
