Default Another Procharged Pontiac is in the works!

These pics were provided to me by an anonymous source. I really don't have very much information other than it's coming out of Bulter's shop and it looks to be a bad biotch! It's a Procharger F1R, EFI with alot of goodies!

Maybe the ac will do double duty as part of an intercooler! (TomV has a patent for such)

That looks great, they did a great job with the procharger plumbing, which is no easy matter

No kidding, Tom V patented the use of an A/C unit as an intercooler? Wow, great idea

Going to be a helluva street car

Like I said in THIS post DAYS AGO, Travis and David Butler should get all of the credit for the deal.

"David Butler sent me some pics recently of a F1R Procharged street engine he did for a Pro Touring guy and it made over 900 hp with 8 psi of boost. Decent wide Ports, a Victor, and Fast EFI."

David Butler said I can post up some pics of the engine so you can see how nice the set-up he did looks. I just provided some input into the deal, Travis and David did the hard work, LOL!

Bad69bird (Brian) said he would post the pics for me. I will send him a few pictures next week to post."

"anonymous source" Right Brian, LOL! Thanks for posting the pics.

Looks pretty good, doesn't it guys?

"Reverse cooling with a Moroso external water pump?"

The engine IS REVERSE COOLING but with a remote ELECTRIC PUMP, Kenny. The Moroso piece is used as a VACUUM PUMP for the engine. March Pulleys, P/S remote reservoir set-up, Alternator, A/C, and Vacuum pump all driven by one serpentine belt.

The cog belt for the blower (for this 900 hp street car) could have been deleted and a serpentine belt deal used for that too, BUT you have to admit IT LOOKS COOL. All fits inder an early Firebird Hood too.

A couple of years ago, a few guys had a meeting at VMP in a conference room to decide on how to grow the Pontiac business as far as parts and power goes. Bob C, Frank G, David and Rodney Butler, Wade C, Paul (from Ram Air Restorations), Travis Q, and myself.

The Forged Cranks came out of that discussion, this engine came out of that discussion, the Vortech work came out of that deal, etc, etc. The PRI work in December came out of the same meeting.

You need to thank those people when you think Blown engines. JMO

This deal was an expensive project, Aluminum Block, good E Heads, F1R, Custom Brackets, A/C, etc and yet the Butlers and Travis pulled it offin an outstanding manner. I remember the days when Pete M was calling these guys a bunch of Tennessee boys...Insert word in place of "boys".. Looks to me like right now the Butlers, based on this work, and the magazine stuff, and the TV stuff, and the ............. are doing pretty good these days.

Most guys will go for the Vortech deal but there is a choice for a guy who wants a custom F1R Procharger type set-up too. More boosted engines ALWAYS makes me happy.

The cooling system question:

Same as a lot of Race cars. In this case though water from the radiator goes through the remote electric water pump, enters the back of the heads, goes through the heads in the normal cooling holes, into the block in the normal holes (drilled IA/ Butler aluminum block),
the out two fittings in the RARE timing cover and back to the radiator.

The engine is not dry decked.

Tell us more about the ignition system, Tom. That's a pretty slick looking low profile distributor. Was the routing of the blower inlet under the manifold done in mind so as to mount a conventional ram-air type pan for air filtration through the hood?

I was wondering the same thing about the distributor. Would like to know more about it.

The ignition system is based on normal Crank trigger wheel stuff on the crank. The spud at the normal location just drives the oil pump and rotor. EFI and ignition are triggered similar to Ford stuff. Travis can speak more on that stuff here on the board as that is his speciality.

The routing under the blower gave a straight shot into the inlet of the blower which is a great thing for efficiency. It also made the plumbing to the cowl easier.
4" diameter round tube except for the area next to the distributor. The Blower, as you can see is VERY WELL SUPPORTED, not like some of the home built set-ups you would typically typically order for a Pontiac for a Pro Charger unit. I know Brad Spidel and others eventually built brackets but this deal is very nicely done as it is a center mount set-up. One other guy with a GTO did a similar deal with a LARGE Pro Charger unit a few years ago but he gave up on the deal I guess.

Brian has a driver's side mount deal, Kenny offers a passenger side deal, and Mark H had another driver's side set-up at Norwalk as did I.

Keep the questions coming.

Tom V.

Tom. Moroso makes an electric water pump that mounts on a plate. Sorta like the marine units. I had one mounted in the Funny car chassis for the blower and bracket racing.
Part number #63570
Has 1 inlet and 2 outlets. Nice piece.
