Default 67 GTO california rochester carb 7037262.

I just got a 67 GTO that is a california car, complete with AIR emission system still intact. The car has the Rochester cali carb 7037262. I would like to replace the carb with a after market carb that will just drop on and bolt up to the existing manifold and plumbing. The old rochester is spilling fuel onto the manifold, wont idle and runs like crap..My long term idea for restoration may be to keep the AIR system intact to keep the car correct or to ditch it. Until then I just want it to run good for a few years until I decide what restoration route I will go. Any aftermarket carb suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks
Tom.

you can either rebuild ur carb thats on the car now or just get a other 2 barrel carb to put on it.if it was me i would keep the air equipment on the car

In case you were considering selling it, I think 6D7GTO was looking for one of these carbs, or maybe it was the Federal version?

I think i'll hang onto the carb. This car lived in Salinas for 37 years then trucked to the east coast. It is all complete and unmolested. Hope all is well in Fremont, I was a resident of the bay area myself in 84,85 AND 86. Hayward, San Mateo, South SF ... I sure did like weekends at Baylands Raceway and KFOG on the radio.

I went though the same thing with my 67. Q-jet was worn out. I bought a new holley spread bore 650 which ran and idled OK but it was seriously lacking in power no matter how I jetted it. At the same time I sent my original Q-jet back to Cliff. The Q-jet is now back on and the car runs big time. The power is back! I can tell by how hard the
T400 barks the 235-60s tires going to second gear. Great job by Cliff.

Yep, another vote for Cliff. He's done two for me and I've been very happy with the results.

Whether you have Cliff rebuild your original, or go with an A/M carb; remember that as long as you retain the original 1967 intake manifold, that stainless steel baffle sitting under the carb is REQUIRED!

While they have been reproduced, the original may normally be saved, if care is taken when the carb is removed.

Thanks Jon,
I spoke to cliff yesterday he provided very good info. His wait is 6 to 8 months so until then I need to find a temporary carb. I am looking for a temp rochester so that it hooks up to exixting setup. Do you know of any aftermarket carb that will be a ok temp replacement.
As far as the steel baffle under tha carb is there any good way to remove the old carb with out damage to the baffle.
Thanks
Tom.

Pull the carb, drill and tap both exhaust passages in the intake manifold. Screw in two brass pipe plugs and you will be happy. Ask Cliff about this mod. I have had no problem with my choke and the carb runs much cooler and I think it is a bit more responsive when the car is hot. With this mod you do not have to replace the stainless plate. It can be reversed by removing the plugs if you don't like it.
