Another Whats it worth thread - 66 GTO
Attached are a few pics of a 66 I know of that is for sale. Car has the original 389 in it, original tranny but a 12 bolt rear out of a Chevelle. Its the original color with original interior. Pretty much everything on the car is original except the nose. It was bumped in about 82 and a nose from a Lemans was put on it. I have known this car for 30 years so can speak of its authenticity otherwise.
Let's assume it is as nice as it looks in the pics and I'll deduct from there when I see it in person. I am taking a bud to look at in a few days so will have better info. Just wanted to come up with a high low range before I get there. Thanks |

I looked on Ebay for comparisons. Judging by the Buy it Now's. I would say anywhere from $25,000 to $32,000, more if it had a Tri-Power setup, super clean interior, frame & pans. There is one now like this for $40,000 but it is a Tri-Power and immaculate.

I think we still need a little more info. The underhood shot makes it look like there is no front sheetmetal? But the other pics show a GTO front end. Then your description says Lemans front end. What options does the car have? I see no PS and no PB. 4-speed or auto can be a big deal.
Based on the little info you gave us, the above numbers seem high to me. Most of the driver condition '66s I've looked at recently were in the $15-25k range. And I wouldn't peg a 4bbl car in that color at the high end of that range.

The pictures were taken by the painter of the car. The front end shot was taken while the sheet metal was off during the process. The car is complete, registered, inspected and ready to go as in the photo's.
The Lemans front end was put on it back in 82 or 83. It is a 4 speed, 4 bbl car, manual brakes, manual steering, no acc. Interiror is original and in pretty decent condition. Not show condition but decent. Original radio is gone. Bumpers are straight and solid, they shine but would need rechromed for show. Interior chrome, Dash Bezel chrome would also need to be done. Stainless is original and in VG condition. No dings or dents. It is a solid driver but would need completely detailed and to compete for the local shows. You would NOT be embarrased to drive it as is however. |

Interior shots would have been nice but from what I can see in the pics, 4spd, 4bbl, nice looking solid driver...I'd say $18K to $25K. Looks real nice. I like the color myself.

I would be pressed to pay more than $20K for this car, if I would go that high.
My perspective is that this is a nice car as is. With some weekend detailing it would be nicer. To get it to the next level will make you upside in this car very quickly. |

Fresh paint if nicely done, quality engine rebuild? I like the color too. Easy to add power steering and brakes if desired for daily use. Tripower is also do-able for kicks...Does it have rally gauges?
I like this car. They are harder and harder to find this solid and ready to cruise. Big plus if you know the owner but I'd still recommend sending off for it's history through PHS. If authentic GTO, and billed as above, I could get talked into paying $25 pretty easily. In person, after more scrutiny, I could even fall more in love with it and pay up to 28Kish if I wanted it bad enough. Do your search of the vin. Then do it!!! Are you going to tell us what the asking price is??

That car would never see anywhere near 35K. People are dumping cars now due to the economy so take advantage of that - Looks very nice for sure and a great car to have. You can start at 15K to see where he goes and what his reactions are, move up if necessary, no more than 22K in my opinion based on economy and other GTO's on the market.

The car is priced at 25K. I am not buying the car but have an inexperienced buddy interested in it looking to me for advice. I tend to be more careful with other peoples money than my own.
If it was me . . . In my mind in todays market 25K opens up a lot of doors. Two years ago, if this was the first car I looked at and priced at 25K I would have jumped on it. In the current market, I may still consider the 25K price as fair. I may just want to take some time to see what other cars are out there in that range. I hope to see the car in person in the next week or so. That will answer tons of questions. |

At $25K, you are just a few bucks shy of drop top money on a non numbers matching car of equal quality. This is where your friend has to weigh his options and decide what he really wants, and what he can spend.

I think the majority in this post favor a $25K price as fair. I would agree. A really nice Lemans may sell in the low to mid teens so why would a real GTO fetch less than 10 grand more based on what we know of the car??

I bought a 67 gto last Feb. car was fresh pro paint job, new interior upholstery minus carpet. Car has 400ys, his/hers, A/C (was removed,I'm currently re-installing) and p/s.I paid 17k and think I got a very good deal. Took a top 5 trophy at ACCA show before I did anything to it.My thought is with the economy and the deal I got I wouldn't pay 20k.
