If you can keep that up for the rest of the car, it's gonna look great. Nice job on the lid. Looks like a mirror.

Where I come from.....If you didn't paint it, you didn't restore it! Good luck with the rest of the car and try not to drag that air hose across your fresh coat.

Looks great. Be careful not to drop that camera in. It looks pretty deep there.

Great job.I have always done my own paint/body work.A lot of work but when it turns out like yours did it gives you a good feeling when you can say 'I did that'.

looks great! Be careful because nothing feels better than a job well done but nothing feels worse than the first scratch.

Hey 79TA455STROKED, your paint job is looking might sick for your first time shooting paint!!! I see you're doing one panel at a time. I will be painting for the first time myself probably this winter and I have been debating whether to shoot the whole car or shoot all the panels and doors off the car seperate. I hope you don't mind mind if I ask a few questions.
1) How many coats of base and how many coats of clear you're spraying on each panel?
2) Also, the last pics of each panel the paint looks fantastic like glass. Can you tell me, what grits of sandpaper you used when wet sanding and what buffing system did you use?

You should be really proud of your results for a first time painter. You're giving me alot of faith that I can do a great job on my car when I'm ready to tackle it on my own.

Thanks.
Brian

Thanks guys!
Brianberes,I spray just enough base to get full coverage. This base has been covering great in two coats so far.
Im putting four coates of clear down. The clear im using ppg concept 2021 says two coats but im putting four because im doing alot of wet sanding and buffing to get it real flat.
Wetsanding,i start with 1000 wet, then 1500 wet, then 2000 wet.I always use a small block with the sand paper so i dont get waves.
Im using a 3m perfect-it 3000 system for buffing, its a 3 step system. Each step has its own foam pad for the var speed buffer.
1)extra cut compound(06060)
2)swirl remover(06064)
3)ultrafina se (06068)
And a 3m micro-fiber cloth to wipe it down with.
If your gonna spray the panels seperate and off the car, make sure you align them first and get all your body work done so your panels have the rite gaps and are flush. Then disassemble.

Super nice Job!!!

Just be careful on assembly of parts. Most guys put tape on mating edges until assembled so they don't chip paint. Then some put thin pieces of 1/8-3/6 carpet in gaps, to get gaps just right, then remove after assembly.

I was always under the impression "why pay someone else to mess it up, when you can mess it up yourself for free!" (LOL) So I do everything myself. Hey thats what its for, a learning experience!

You did an outstanding job! You can take pride in your work! Thats what hot rodings all about!

Once again GREAT Job!!! Keep us up dated.

Congratulations on a beautiful job! Speaking of protecting the edges with masking tape for reassembly, I would suggest taking it a step further. What would you guys think about using the white stuff that you see on new cars and covering an entire panel with it just prior to reassembly? That would really protect that gorgeous paint job and finish. Any other ideas?

That looks great!! Did you learn body work/paint basics somewhere? I've done a little body work in the past, but not paint. I'm wondering if there's a good DVD or book that covers some painting techiques.

Pardon my intrusion into your question, but are you familiar with a fella named Kevin Tetz? Kevin is a well-renowned paint and body expert who has also made numerous appearances on several automotive TV series. As a matter of fact, if you are in Tennessee you aren't too far from where he resides in Pulaski, which is "just up the road a piece" from here.

For more info and links to his DVD's, go to the Paintucation web site to learn more. Eastwood's has also started selling his DVD titles. Of course, there is no substitute for experience and good judgement, but it should get you off to a start.

I'm not trying to pimp for him, but information is where you find it. Good luck!
