Default HEADLIGHT SWITCH PROBLEM

Hello guys,

I have a problem with my headlight switch. On my 66 Grand Prix, my headlight switch has two notches. Usually when I pull the switch to the first notch, the parking lights come on and when I pull the switch to the second notch, the parking lights go off and the headlight come on.

Now when I pull the switch the parking lights are still off and when I pull the switch to the second notch, the parking lights come on and the headlight are off.

I encounter this problem when I took my dash apart. Before I took my dash apart, my lights worked fine, but now I can't get my headlight light on at all. Can someone please help me? Thanks.

first, verify you have the connector plugged in correctly. 1 pin off will make a world of difference.

also make sure you've not dislodged a wire in the connector.

check all your grounds, stupid things happen when they aren't hooked up.

verify the dimmer switch's operation with a dvom.

if the above is all ok you've probably got a healight switch that died.

Firstly, are you SURE you used the original headlight switch???

You did not replace it with another??? The headlight switch used on a 1965 & 1966 PONTIAC big car is unique to these cars. Other may look the same but they are different internally. I feel the same switch was also used on a '66 Tempest but that's it. NO other GM switch will work.

Secondly, seeing as you have been playing about with the dash, are you SURE you have not interfered with the earth (grounding) wires???? Are they ALL connected???The '66 dash was the first to use the printed circuit type loom behind the speedo. They are a bit temperamental and the earth points are critical

Apart from that, what Mike said

Let us know how you get on.

The headlight switch is the original. I guess while I had the dash out, maybe something came loose. Now I'm have problems with the windshield wiper switch too, because it will not turn off. The only way to stop it is to take the fuse out of the fuse box. I also notice the fuse for the instrument lights and the cig lighter keeps burning out. Maybe it's something I did or didn't do when removing the dash panel. I also had my engine rebuilt, so between the shop and me, something is wrong. Thanks for the help.

regarding the diffs in switches. i had to replace the one in the g/p before norwalk last year. we matched one up from a later model and the only function that didn't work was the marker lights / taillights when the headlamps were on. i jumped a terminal in the fusebox to get them on until i found a replacement / repaired the orig. come to think of it, the jumper's still there.

the wipers park off of a ground circuit. i'd start there. also chsck the main connection at the firewall. it may be loose or not seated completly.
