Correct finish 1969 400 oil pressure S/U
What is the correct finish for a 1969 400 oil pressure sending unit. Should it be cad plated or painted? Thanks

I have a couple that are black,some that are or were cad plated.
And some with overspray on them like they got some metallic blue on them during final paint of engine. |

FWIW- I've got two orignal 80# sending units that I personally took off of %100 original numbers mathing 1969 400 firebirds and both are cad plated.

From what I have seen, the 1969 units were gold cad plated and the 1970's were painted black.

Here's the one that came off my 1969 400 firebird -w- Rally gauge cluster that was built in late October 1968. I've got another one around here somewhere that came off a 1969 400 Firebird also with a ralley cluster that was built in late August/Early September 68.
The body still apears to have some of the cad plating on it, is stamped 80 on the hex nut on the bottom and has INTERPOL stamped on the top. I hooked it up my ohm-meter and it had a stabile output. I then blew in the port, the resistance changed upward but seemed to jump around a lot. It might be good but then again it might not be. Well this dumb thing says upload failure when I try to attach the pics. They are smaller that the limit so what gives??

HFR- I beg to differ as I removed them from two different 69 400 cars with ralley gauges and the are both identical to one another. Both cars were early build cars.

Good question. I'll run out and check and get right back with the answer.
ANS - Yes wire brushed the base and found numbers on the base nut 180 degrees off from the 80. The numbers are 0379. According to the factory assembly manual, the 80# sender should be part number 6462137 so I don't know what 0379 signifies. 37 day of 69?? The second sender pictured is in storage so I'll have to go get it clean it and I'll post pics of it later.

Yes, it's a date code. But, I'm thinking more '79 or '89. I can't believe they went from the style you're picturing, to the early 1970's style, and back to the style you've pictured.

I see what you mean about the styles and agree that it would be very odd to use one case style, switch to a different style, then switch back.
Therefore, I've got to assume that these are indeed replacements. The first car belonged to a friend that bought it 1971 and he swears that he never changed the sender. How a replacement got installed is a mystery. The second car was a 17K mile 400 firebird from southern california and I wouldn't have thought the sender would have been changed that early but must have been. We also dug up a third one shown in front. This one appears to be an earlier style as the top terminal is screwed on (matches the 70 style shown in the other thread). The other two units have the terminal rivieted on which would be a cost/reliability improvement to the original sender and thus couldn't predate the bolt on version. I concede - you're right.

seems like the ones on cars @ plant, had black ones. I have a 71 dated unit in delco box. It's gold cad.
