Default 79 TA posi question

Hi,
I'm putting a 79 TA posi in & wanted to know if it is the 8.2" or 8.5"?
Also, do they make a 3.55 for it or do I have to go with a 3.42 or 3.73?
Thanks!

should be the 8.5 corporate. I don't think the 3.55 is available; 3.42 or 3.73 are the choices.

There is definitely no 3.55 set available for the 8.5 rear. I checked every supplier a couple of months back and ended up with a 3.42 set.

I think that 3:55 is a 12 bolt ratio.

No, the 2nd gen Birds got the 8.5" rear through 81. When the Turd Gen came out they started really scrimping.

Check Ebay.

I bought an new Eaton 12 bolt Posi carrier about 6 months ago from a dealer type of vendor & his price was quite a bit cheaper than any others I found.

I believe he also sold gears & bearings.

There's been several ring and pinion sets listed here in firebird parts for sale, pretty cheap.

Make sure you know which carrier you have, before you start buying gears. 2.41 & 2.56 are out there by themselves. 2.73 or 278 and lower, everything else fits.
