Being a newb I need to know what the timing marks on the cover look like? I think the marks are broken as I have a small nub and no ignition timing marks anywhere.

There are two kinds of marks, one was fixed, second was bolt on, any idea what year engine (or car) you have?

Sounds like mix-match parts. Old 60's covers had a nub for a pointer and the numbers were on the balancer. Later 60's and through the 70's the numbers were on a timing tab on the cover and the balancer just had one mark. And then there were the covers that had a bolt on timing tab and a single mark on the balancer.

Most all these parts interchange and you have to come up with your own way to make marks and set timing. This has been covered a few times here. If you could post a pic of the passengers side of the timing cover, we can probably get you headed in the right direction.

Dude, Yep thats probably what I need.

It's a 326 out of a 65 Tempest Custom 4dr, I should have mentioned that at the beginning sorry.
