Angry rod side clearance

quick question... im trying to check the side rod clearance on my 400 and 301 and these are my first strip downs.

my haynes and chiton mannual are not helping....
spec says for a 1970 400 should be between 0.012-0.017 which is all very well and good but how exactly do i measure it????...i mean i know you get a feeler gauge ,slide it down the side between rod and crank (top ,to the side??? im not sure) until the play is removed and wallaaa!!...but depending on where the crank is in its rotation i get completely differant readings as well as which side (front or back) of the rod changes as well... im getting between 0.012-0.020 depending ..!!

please help...driving me nuts

Put equal amounts of feeler gauge between the rods on both sides next to the rod parting line.. what you may be experiencing is the rod rocking/twisting on the crank pin giving you erratic results .. kinda hard for me to explain but evenly load the sides of the rods against the crank counterweights so the rods stay parallel to each other..

Stock can be anything from .008 to .012. Street/strip can be .014/.018
Race with steel rods can be .016/.024 without issues.
