Question Which motor mounts?

Which motor mounts should I use to put a 1972 block into a 67 Lemans?? The set I had were for a 455 and do not work. They were given to me with a 455 block 1976...is that why they didn't fit? Can I use regular mounts that I could get from any parts store?? In a hurry since the motor is just sitting waiting to go in car.

Thanks in advance.

I believe all 455's came with the dual bolt pattern for the 2 different motor mounts, someone please correct me if this is wrong. You will need the older style. I am not sure when they changed them from a 2 bolt to a 3 bolt. Get a pair from a 67 GTO and you will be fine.

The ones I tried were 3 bolt. So regular mounts for a 67 will work? Can I just go to a parts store (Autozone, Pepboys, etc.) and order for a 1967 with a 400?? Is there any difference between mounts on a 67 and a 72 block??

Thanks

It has been several years since I have bought motor mounts, but I would guess that they are still available at stores like that. Yes, the 67 400 is what you want. I am 99.9% positive that the 72 is drilled and tapped for both the 2 and 3 bolt mounts, so either will work.

This is the response I posted in the race section for your question:

This is the correct information, 77-79 were the years to only have the later bosses for the late style 3 bolt mounts in the standard deck engines. 70-76 have the universal block with 5 bolts to mount both styles of mounts. 59-69 have only the early style 2 bolt mounts on them. All the 301s and 265s from 77-81 (short deck engines) have only the 3 bolts for the later style mounts. You don't need adapters for your block, just use the stock 67 LeMans mounts from a parts store, the holes are already there.

the above is pretty much correct. if my memory is still reasonably sound, the 3 bolt mounts started with 1970 production year blocks to allow mounting in the 2nd gen F body chassis, which had the engine positioned further back in relation to the X-member.

what i believe i read was, somewhere in the mid 70s, 73/74/75?, some blocks were cast with all the mounting PADS, but not all of them were drilled. I'm guessing some castings were destined for the F body, or A body, specifically, therefore the machining of bolt holes for the other(s) were not done.

I have a 73 block, and it has all 5 holes tapped, FWTW.

if your block has all 5 pads tapped, then all you need are the mounts for the 67 GTO, as outlined earlier. if by some wild chance your block has all 5 pads, but only 3 are drilled, you WILL need the adaptor in order to mount the block in the 67 frame. although i highly doubt your block is like that.

To Rolling Money Pits, my '78 W72 block has the 5 bosses machined but only the f body ones drilled. Is it able to drill and tap the others close enough to fit in my 69 GTO. Currently the engine is in the car with adapters, but those made the mounts too wide and a big pain in the butt to install. Next time it would be nice to know if I can just get the correct holes tapped.

Thanks

Default Which motor mounts?

I have the same problem on my '69 convertible. I have a '72 455 block and a turbo 400 transmission. The transmount is about half and inch or an inch too far back to allow the crossmember to bolt to the frame. Right now it has '69-back engine mounts. If I switch to the three bolt '70 up mounts will it pull the engine forward enough to bolt the crossmember properly?

no. the F-body ( 3 hole ) mounts move the engine more rearward, which would make your problem worse. not to mention those mounts take a wider frame mount, so they wouldnt even bolt up to the 69 X-member. something isnt right with your set up. i think all gto auto cars, after a certain year (66?), came with thm400s, at least up to 72. if your car has had several prior owners, who knows what messing around was done with engines/transmissions/trans X members and frame mounts. ??

your 72 block with a thm400 trans should drop right into your 69 chassis and bolt up no problem. what was in the car when you got it, in terms of engine/trans? IIRC, thm350s were a little shorter than the 400s, and took a different trans X-member.

andyg - same goes for your setup. if you drill/tap the two bosses on the block that arent, and bolt up mounts for a 69 A body, it should drop right into place. no fuss, no muss.
