I am building a 1967 firebird convertible. Today I just received my pump gas 461 Butler performance motor with e-heads, victor intake, 4 bolt mains, Holley 950, forged crank, doug headers (1 7/8) and more. It will be hooked up to a TKO 600 and 12 bolt rear end. I was just curious how many other members run high HP motors on the street and what kind of reliability I can expect from this combo?

My engine is being built now......expected HP due to a similar combo is around 640 at around 5800 with torque expected to be around 670 at 4000-4200. Should be very streetable due to the 'smallish' cam. It'll go on the dyno after assembly to be broke in and then the fun begins......
I'm not gonna try too hard to hook it up or it'll probably do a number on my body panels being a vert...... Good problem to have......... |

Hope you have subframe connectors with that much power on a convertible.

I run mine on the street ALOT! It beats 70 challengers with 499CI no problem!
I would not consider mine a high HP motor but when i swap the heads then things will change. The nitrous i just addd should help too.

Not sure how much power it really has, but before any tuning it made 522ftlbs and 400hp on a chassis dyno. It was blowing through the converter the entire time, and it already had some damage from some jerk dumping a couple handfuls of gravel down the carb. That is the second engine in my signature. As for reliability, dont let anyone near it who has a problem with you being faster or you having a loud car, and it should last a while.
How long everything behind it will last depends on traction and how often you drive it. |

Not sure how much horsepower our new engine makes? It does, like our last engine make torque up around 600ft lbs, with over 500ft lbs available across most of the loaded rpm range. We are able to use this sort of power to run quite well with a relatively heavy car using moderate gearing and torque converter. I'm sure we wouldn't win any horsepower competititions with it, but it is as smooth as most stock engines, and drives on the street like it's a mid 70's low compression 350 engine with a 2bbl carburetor!.....Cliff

Pump gas 505cid with 642 hp on the engine dyno, I have no idea of the hp with the engine installed with accessories. Fantastic rough idle, not like a puney stock engine, and drives on the street like a bad ass hot rod should !

My 400 is in the assembly/blueprint stage but should have 450+ hp and 500+ lb-ft of torque.
Not really high horsepower but enough for now. ![]() Stewart

I probably have similar HP with the 468 in my '67 Camaro, Edelbrocks heads, smallish Crane mech. roller, Holley 950, Tremec TKO and 12-bolt 4.10 gears. After putting the engine in all of my breakage has been with the clutch and rear end. I now run a Centerforce Dual friction which I've only fried once at the track.
Make sure that you reinforce the spring perches and use full U-bolts for the leaf spring mounts. I learned the hard way ($$$) when I ripped the perches off of the tubes of my original 12-bolt.
