Question valley cover bolts

I am going to use a 68-72 valley cover with my roller cam set up... and my cover now is the egr style with the bigger dip... are the bolts a different length? really only need to know the length? I am sure any good bolt will work thats the right size....
thanks

Hi Darby!!
Two things to watch out for:
1. You must be very careful on attaching the valley pan! On most Pontiac blocks, not all, the holes that hold the valley pan on are drilled through to the #2 and #4 cam bearings. If you use too long bolts, or tighten them too tight, you can go right through and put a wedgie on the cam bearings. If in doubt, count the number of turns,(usually 14) before the bolt bottoms out and don't go beyond that point!!
2. On some roller lifter/cam combinations the lifters will hit the bottom of the valley pan. Most of us with big roller cams, use an aftermarket valley pan that is flat, for that purpose. I don't think you'll have a problem, but test fit the valley pan without a gasket and roll the engine over a few times once the valve train is installed to insure clearance.

I'm back in MN now for the holidays - so you can call me if you want, Bill

I modified my '76 valley pan to clear the Crower roller lifters. It isn't pretty from underneath but from the top looks borderline stock. It took about 15 minutes with a hammer. If I don't like it or want to change, I'll wait until Ace gets his repro valley pans on the market. Finding a good, clean, used early pan for a decent price is not easy.

Why not just use studs?? Dry fit a pair to check the length and make sure you have sufficient thread engagement for nuts.

You won't have to worry about interference with cam bearings, you can use blue Loctite on the threads to hold them into the block to the right length, and you can use TH-400 pump sealing washers under the nuts.

Besides, it makes assembly of the pan to the block easier if you're using sealer.

Yah, that's what I did to mine. I "massaged" it. As you can see from the pix this was a deep tissue massage not some wimpy backrub. I made sure that when I pushed the lifters up so the top of the oil groove was even with the lifter boss there was clearance between the lifter bars and the pan, i.e., full unencumbered movement. They will never this pan unless everything grenades.

Oh and BTW, the bolts for a stock '76 pan are 3.125" from the bottom washer surface to the end of the bolt.

Jeez Stewart, that sure is a 20 footer!

Kinda reminds me of a one night stand...particularly the next morning!

Thanx Phil! I never said it was pretty, but I figured it for a 50 footer!

The harsh light of the camera don't do it any justice. Besides it'll be under the intake and effectively unnoticed. OK, so I need to smooth it out a bit more. It hasn't cost me anything but time.

I'll have to take your word on the one-night-stand though. I never dated an ugly women!

That's the whole point of the one night stand. You don't HAVE to date them!

You missed my point. I use the term "dated" euphemistically. And none of them were ugly, no matter what they looked like.
