Default What intake should I use? 472 stroker

Hey guys getting back into Pontiacs again. I have a 472 stroked 400. I'm using a set of e-heads ported to flow (I think 330@5-600 lift). My cam is a [email protected] and .575 lift with 110cl. I have a 3500 stahl converter in a stock bodied and weight 78 trans am. I would like to retain the stock shaker or get a dude scoop if necessary. The car will be beaten like it owes me money on a regular basis as well as alot of street driving. The gear is a 3.73 but I am looking to buy a 9" and will decide the final gear ratio after I figure what this motor needs. The big qustion is what intake is best? I also would like thoughts on a carb choice too. Was thinkin King demon but a 4150 950 or so may suffice?

a ported victor would be the best choice but you will have to cut the plenum down about .650 to put it under the hood. performer rpm would be my second choice.
rethink your carb choice. either put on a hp series holley 850-950 or buy a custom carb. barry grant's carbs are very inconsistant as far as quallity goes. you may get a good one, but if you don't you'll have a hell of a time getting it handled.

what the gentleman from texas said. a properly prepared 850 or 950 will work fine with your combination. i'm running low 10's at over 130 with an 850. for the intake, i'd cut down a victor if it was up to me.

The Tomahawk sits lower than the RPM, making it something to consider when clearance is an issue...

I've cut down Victors before so that's no problem. I may use a nitrous 1" plate at some point (if this thing don't run bottom 11's). Is there any loss in hp with cutting down the intake? Can I get that dude scoop to work on my set up w/o milling the intake? I've owned Holly's all my life and once I rebuilt a demon for a guy and man are they nice. I know about the dirty issues but if they are inconsistent from the factory with the way they are casted or something, that will de-ter me.

Another option is massaging the heck out of a Torker intake. What I have on my 78 TA and pump gas motor. I know a local guy here in Houston who welded a Dominator adaptor to one and was in the 9s with it and spray.

For mine it took ALOT of blending up the runners to maintain the width and height of the port at the head. Also my heads had been ported taller than a Troker could seal so I had to add weld on the top to get it to seal.

Been through what you are going through!LOL

I ran a tomahawk and 850 mighty demon on lesser of a combo(300cfm edel,hyd 250-256 cam) and ran 11.4's.
You can fit a shaker with that combo.

I did pick up going to a victor,fastest was 10.90's at 123mph.
Had to make my own custom shaker baseplate along with a drop base air cleaner bottom to get it to fit.

I now have a 4500 victor and 1050 king demon with the wideport edel heads and am gonna make another custom shaker base plate, dude scoop to try and fit it.It should work.

If i were you,i would go victor and a 850 demon or you might pick up with a king demon. The hp holley 1000 carbs are just glorified 850cfm carbs.
I had no issues with my demons, like them better then holleys.I did switch the king demon from a 3 circuit carb to a 2 circuit carb because of streetablilty and it was leaning out up top but holleys have the same issues.
You wont fit a 1" spacer though with this combo and a shaker.

Take a look at the Quick Fuel Technology line of carbs.
http://www.quickfueltechnology.com/
I've run their 850cfm race carb on my Catalina for a few years now. I've tried other carbs but I keep coming back to the QF. Very nicely engineered. Excellent customer service.

"Is there any loss in hp with cutting down the intake?"

It depends on the combination involved. On my 505 build it was about 8 hp cutting it down 0.650" and on a larger 535 build David Butler reported about 15 hp. I use a HP950 carb and the combo Butler did used a HP950 as well.

As for the intake. Again it will be combination specific and will vary but on my 505 it's above 650 hp with the Victor intake with no carb spacer. Dyno results with a Tomahawk intake with 1" spacer was at 611 hp, a Holley Street Dominator intake modified by Dave Bischopp resulted in 618 hp, it also had a 1" spacer installed and last the Performer RPM intake with a 1/2" spacer produced 634 hp. All intakes were port matched to the heads and the HP950 was used. The intakes were tested with the amount of carb spacer as it would be installed in my car with hood clearance issues.

I also tested the Victor, worked HSD and Performer RPM on my previous 462 combo with the same HP950 carb....

Victor w/ 1/2" open spacer:
595.1 ft.lbs tq at 4700 rpm and 600.9 hp at 6000 rpm.

Performer RPM w/ 1/2" open spacer:
589.1 ft.lbs. tq at 4400 rpm and 580.2 hp at 5800 rpm.

Holley Street Dominator w/ 1/2" open spacer:
589.0 ft.lbs. tq at 4600 rpm and ?

The HSD at peak power was interesting...

At 5500 rpm was 583.5 hp
5600 was 589.4 hp
5700 was 582.3 hp
5800 was 585.1 hp
5900 was 583.5 hp
6000 was 578.2 hp

Also tested a Torker II intake but the testing was invalid. It was out-of-the-box and not port matched to my tall ports like the other intakes. It produced 576.3 ft.lbs. tq at 4500 rpm and and at peak power it was about 566 hp. Similar to the HSD intake the peak power rpm with the TII varied at 5500 thru 5800 rpm.

Did you shave your intake?

No,didnt shave any intake including the victor. That drop abse i made worked with it.You can see in the pic, which was with a tomahawk intake, that i was able to run a 1" spacer with the tomahawk and the drop base i made.
