Default TRANSMISSION CODE

Can someone please ID this tranny code: 65 MJ 178 It is currently on my 71 lemans sport. I'm thinking TH 350 off a 65 pontiac. Anyone know for sure? Thanks, David

The only transmision available was a ST300(2 speed) untill 67 and a TH400 was offered. so it is definatly not a 65' mabey 75'

Where did you find the code?

Where is the modulator?

Does it have a downshift cable?

I'd say it is probably a 1978 TH350.

The MJ in 78 was 7MJ, I thought?

The 178 is probably the date code.

I found the code on passenger side-- small circular cover(servo?). Vacuum modulator is also on pass side at the rear. I have been looking at pictures, and I think it might be a ST300 off a 65 pontiac. David

You're right.
I found the ID for the ST300.

The 65 is the year, the MJ is the code for the ST300, and the 178 is the julian date for the tranny.

johnta1, Thanks for your help with the tranny ID. I'm not too crazy about having this 2 speed on my 71 lemans. Do you know if I can use a TH4oo? The engine is a 350 2bbl off a 73 pontiac. David

You can use a short shaft THM 400 without too much of an issue.
