Default Where are the values now on '78 SE 4 spd?

I located a Y88 with a 4 spd, and the body is pretty fair. Needs wheel fairings and the engine and trans are removed from the car. The body has a dent, but pretty solid otherwise. I think the engine is in pieces, taken down to determine the reason that was causing the knock--spun bearing.
I haven't kept up with prices, so what do you think it's range is? It's NOT a WS6 car, but I think it's a true W72 with original block. What should the code be on a 4 spd W72? X7 or WC?
TIA,

Engine code for 1978 W72 4-speed would be WC. Hard to determine values withourt seeing pictures. The more work it needs to return to new condition the lower the value.

The block code is X7 according to the owner who didn't even know it was supposed to have a machine turned dash insert. He's a hyper talking Yankee that may not even know what I'm talking about on codes. But since he mentioned that it was an X7 without my mentioning any codes, I'm thinking he saw the code somewhere. But then again he said the heads were 7X's. He said he couldn't find the VIN stamping at one time. The trans tunnel has a 4x6 inch molded in opening and he said it was a Super T-10 trans. So, I believe it probably is a 4 spd car.

I was a little vague on body condition description. Just a range like I usually look for would be fine. It's not a freshly painted car, so that shouldn't come into play--pics aren't going to help if it needs paint. So assuming it needs painted due to fade and having a dent in the 1/4, a LITTLE rust in the fender lowers and around the wheel wells. It's a straight car that's been sitting since 95. The floors are fair. The rears have a LITTLE rust, thru but the trunk is supposed to be 100%.

What do projects like this range from?

Without pictures, I'd say between $500 and $2500 would be the price range. The rust could be worse than it appears to be... and since it's been sitting for almost 15 years you know alot of things are going to need to be done to make the car roadworthy. Some people have no issue with paying $4-5k for a project that is in pieces and doesn't run, but I do. If it's a true W72 car, that's great. I honestly can't see it being a W72 car in the current condition it is in (spun bearing, in pieces) making much of any difference in the price.

The X7 stamp on the block would be designated for the w72 auto trans car, but who knows what might have been swapped over the years....

I respectfully disagree. A true W72 car is worth more when its completed, restored or in pieces. If its worth more done, its worth more as a project.

We will have to agree to disagree then. W72 cars are worth plenty, but we aren't talking RAIV Judges, SDs, or Hemis here. The average buying public does not know much about the W72 and doesn't care. They want a black Trans Am that "looks like the movie car" and don't care about details such as the engine.

Cuda's, Challenger's, Judge's will go the way of the 57 Chev and the model T. As the public ages the desire to own these cars goes away. Folks just get too old. Most people want the car they grew up with. The more that want them, the higher the price goes. The limited build of any specific body style will usually command a premium so I believe the W-72 SE cars will be worth more and in some cases they already are worth more than a SD. Plenty of Hemi's were bought for way more than they will ever bring. The air is coming out of them too.

ummm.... need some examples here. less than 1500 total SD's vs how many thousands of W-72's???? A legendary engine vs. a whopping 220hp.

I think within the second generation birds, the 71-74 455 SD, & HO's are going to lead the pack in value. But within the remaining years of 75-81 The W72's will be the desirable engine option. I would agree that most people are not aware of the W72 yet. Just us T/A freaks. They will come around, But not until the 2nd gen cars are sought after the way the 67-69 camaros have been through the 90's. Then people will pay attention to how they were optioned.
