Default heater control valve?

The heater control valve on my 71 started leaking this week and sprayed some antifreeze around the engine compart. Went looking for a replacement and found there is no exact replacement. NAPA wants to sell me a plastic one, PY has a metal stamped repop that is also different than mine...

From what I have read this valve only affects the AC when it is on high, otherwise it does nothing. I've also read that the later 71's didn't come with the heater control valves.

I have a couple of questions.

Do I need to replace this valve or will everything function well without it?

If I don't replace it, do I just plug the vaccum line that ran to it?

In the MAX a/c mode it closes off water to the heater core to allow the outlet ait temp to be cooler without a hot heater core giving off heat. If the valve is leaking it would need to be replaced or bypassed.

Just curious if the original heater control valve is a Rochester valve that has the retaining nut to screw the valve onto the bracket.

Try Old Air Products www.oldairproducts.com

I was able to clean up my old one, so can't vouch for the quality of the product.
Hope this helps...

What Sam Elm linked is exactly what I put on my '72 when I converted it over to a '70 setup. It only opens the valve when you crack the temperature slider a little over to the warm side from the max cold setting. I got it from CarQuest. NAPA had a plastic one.
