Today I was looking for a good place to mount the transmission cooler on my '64 Tempest, it has a 4L70E 4-speed overdrive trans with a Yank Performance 3600 stall lockup converter.
The air conditioning condensor takes up the space in front of the radiator where I was first thinking of putting it. There is not enough room up front anywhere behind the bumper. I am considering mounting it to the passenger side frame rail and to the two floor pan braces just above it. It will go directly behind the body mount brace just underneath the passenger seat. ![]() There is plenty of clearance between the exhaust system and the cooler, the X-crossover is directly across from it so the hot exhaust pipes will be as far away from it as would be possible. I can run the 3/8" steel cooler lines going across to the trans just above the trans crossmember to keep the heat transfer from the hot exhaust minimized as much as possible. ![]() Does anyone see a problem with this approach? With the car moving down the road at normal traffic speeds I would think there should be plenty of airflow. Would stones or road debris kicked up by the right front tire tend to damage it? The B&M Supercooler I'll be using is a plate-type design that is more resistant to impacts than the tube & fin-type coolers. It's not like there are a bunch of stone chips on the bottom of the floorpans already. I know that cast aluminum framerail mounted coolers are available, but they don't look like they would cool nearly as well as the plate type cooler I have. Any helpful input would be appreciated.

Rocks and lack of air flow
.Road heat on a hot day radiating up? There is a kit too with a small fan mounted directly to the cooler also, just more money. Could you get a picture up front where AC condenser is? I also run a B&M plate cooler and I,m very happy with it, but it is mounted up front and I have no AC condenser. I run a BTO OD 200r4 with a 2600 stall LU converter. In drive on a 75 degree day trans temps never get above 140 in normal driving around town , stop and go stuff. Nice Tranny/convertor choice too .

But suffice it to say,my beliefs on this subject changed quite a bit after all that. I personally think that's about the worst place to mount the cooler. Sorry I dont have any practical/helpful advice to give here.

I would say the cheap coolers are less prone to rock damage. The plate cooler has the tubing all the way to the outside while the cheapo coolers have about 3/8" fin before getting near the tubes.
My 67 with A/C had enough room in front of the stock condenser for the B&M unit. After installing the Lexus 400 condenser the trans cooler fit between the radiator and the condenser.

Bart,
I think you are utilizing about the only suitable spot left on your densely packaged "hybrid" Tempest. As billz428 mentioned, adding an electric fan mounted to the top side of the cooler should take care of the heat from idling/low speed operation, and a stone shield fashioned from medium gauge perforated metal (curved up in front to act as a skid plate) would deflect debris that might be pitched upward from the roadbed and damaging the cooler. eeeehhhh. i have an old 67 econoline that i wanted to run and aftermarket tranny cooler. I wound up putting it in pretty much the exact same spot mounted at about a 30 degree angle and it even has a big sheet metal scoop AAANND a mini elecetric fan on top pulling (at the flip of a switch). it isnt enough. im thinking that its a combination of things....even with the fan on. I think that the placement there catches alot of the heat off of the motor, headers, radiator and the road and the airflow alone isnt that good. even on the open road it still ran hot...then get stuck in traffic and whoa, it really starts cooking.
i finally bought an additional tranny cooler and mounted it parrallel to the ground inbetween the front grill and radiator with a scoop on top and a backwards scoop underneath. and that works great. any chance you can get a longer thinner cooler and mount it just above the bottom lip of you front bumper with the same type setup? i know that thats the area and idea i had when i was looking to mount an intercooler. IF that is the only place then at the least i would try to mount is with the leading edge up as high to the floorboard as you can get it....but i think you will probably be re doing it down the road. i can post pics of the econolines coolers later.

I'd be real leery about having it mounted there. The airflow issues aside, that thing would be ripe for the picking from any stray material on the road.
Even a garden variety plastic grocery bag, think what would happen if it got hung up it? Nevermind sticks, rocks, roadkill, retread caps, etc., that you'd encounter. Been a long, long time since I persued the front end of a 64. Is there room between the bumper, lower valence, and bottom of core support? You'd have to fab up some bracketry, but could it be mounted in there on an angle? Looks like you'd get air flow from the two slots in the bumper below the grille openings. Or, you could fab again a small duct to better direct the airflow in there?

here is what didnt work (cooler, fan and scoop placed where you want it)
![]() notice the big scoop...and the sheet metal in an attempt to keep radiator, motor and exhaust heat away from entering it. there is also a small electric fan behind it and on top pulling and it still wasnt enough. this shot was taken from behind the front tire ground level. (i havent had any problems with road debris) here is the pic of the new tranny cooler that works great. another benefit is that the radiator doesnt see any of the heat coming off of the tranny cooler, it all gets vented below the radiator, not a good shot but you can see the leading edge of the scoop. like i mentions earlier, the cooler lays parrallel with the ground. ![]() here is a shot of the bottom, i realize that you probably dont have the room for this so you could probably not add it. i thought it would simply help move the ariflow in the right direction. front bumper is to the left and that is the front passenger tire to the right.

I had room on my '66 to place it in front of the condenser on the driver's side. I made a bracket and hung it off the center grill support end of the condenser mounting brackets. I had to lower it a bit since there is less clearance behind the top of the grills. It has been very effective lowering my tmps by 50 deg.

Bart - I don't have a very good picture of it, but I mounted mine on the rear of the core support on the passenger side. I used a hole saw to drill enough holes in front of it to get good air flow. Originally I had two muffin fans on it, but I have since removed them with no adverse effects.

I found a better picture of it. You can see the trans cooler through the grill, and at the lower part you can see the additional holes I drilled. Let me know if better pictures would be a help.

There is just too much crap on the road. Wouldn't take much to poke a hole in it.
I like Old Goat 67's thought. Surely there (might) be some room on the side of the core support. A cooler w/ a fan there, is my thought.. Your car has more room there than my "F" body... The rock chips would be a concern but, something bigger might jerk the whole cooler loose. I'd be more paranoid than normal if the cooler was under the car... What kind of mufflers are those in pic??? I'm waiting to see what 67 lamnas has on his car... Jeff

Looking at oldmans tailers frond end i see there is a way to do it the way i did my coolers (3 of them) one dual engine oil/ trans oil, cooler. and 2 trans coolers at the valance gab

Took a couple shots of mine...granted it's roughly 1/2 the size of yours....and nevermind the bugs and water spots.......
