Fred A. Carleson dealer in Salt Lake City. This is where my car was purchased 40 years ago. Imagine if buildings looked like this today. So much style.

Looks like it's from the art-deco period. You're right - so much more character than today's buildings...

Amen! When style was affordable and the American dream still alive!
I know this is probably the wrong forum for the picture, but Carleson was a zone dealer and it seems more than a handful of Judges came from this dealer (and owned by users of this forum). Look at all the Pontiac neon signs. The photo was taken in 1949. Imagine this place at night all lit up. |

Seems to me that the easiest explanation would be that it got the wrong rocker trim put on.

one thing that was really a one of a kind about milner pontiac, is that it was a two story dealership.

The history of Carleson is pretty amazing. As I recall, he was the patriarch of what has become a very well known Utah family. Fred Carleson went to Utah from Wyoming in 1919 and was a pioneer in bringing automobiles to the state. He has a very, very colorful history which is very well documented in the state's historic archives (his wife was a writer and artist). Also, they loved cars and it seems that there are a ton of car photos. I think the dealership closed in 1993 when he died (97). Unless the streets have changed since the 1960's, it appears that the address was surrendered and the building demolished to make way for The Great American Hotel (I think 555 South Main Street...Carleson was at 535 Main Street). Interestingly, there is a Carleson Auto Body and Paint just a block or so from the hotel. It seems like they were a real enthusiast's dealership (in Salt Lake of all places) and sold a lot of nice cars. I know there is someone with an Antique Gold 1969 that came from there and, as I recall, a Judge convertible or two. The cars were made at the Fremont factory and delivered to the dealership. |
