Is this the right application for a 79 ta 4spd, hooker header competion; part #4901? Left side header will not clear linkage bracket on frame and the rod coming down for the steering lockout is hanging back a bit beacause the header tube is now there. Thanks Mike

That is actually common on most any vehicle. Only way to fix it is remove the bar going to the column or have someone re-route it for you, if you intend to keep it. On our '80 Trans Am, we removed all that linkage. The car has a floor shifter, so it's no big deal.

is there any way to get the reverse lights to work without that linkage?

Two ways that I know of to do this. An all weather switch and bracket fabricated and mounted on the transmission or the shifter so the reverse arm hits it upon engagement, or a manual dash mounted toggle with a pilot light so you don't go down the road with the reverse lights on.

'79 400-4 speed.....Hedman #28150 for D-port exhaust.
No issues whatsoever and max ground clearance. About $200 too. I use and recommended for years.

I have run those headmans for several years now, and they worked great with an auto. However, when I changed to a 4 speed the only problem that I have had with them is access to my oil filter. I don't have enough room to remove my filter since my bell housing has a hump for a starter on the passenger's side of the engine. As far as linkage goes, nothing hits the headers.

Looks like according to Summit application chart the Hedman #28150 for D-port headers look like a better fit, thinner in the tube 18 vs 16 gauge and the flanges 1/4 vs 5/16 and show will work for stick and reverse linkage(maybe with modification) as compared with Hooker which is listed as a no go for linkage. The only differance I see is the collector is a ball flange vs bolt on collector and maybe ground clearence? My goal is to be able to install all the oem trans equipment. I have the hooker street comp's on now, but will be ordering the headman set soon, now if I could only get the clutch to engage so that I could get into gear that would be wonderful. Thanks for all the replys,
Mike |
