Default air compressor question

There is an air compressor at work that will soon be mine, if i want it.
Our store is relocating and the owners dont want to move all the old stuff.

It is a SpeedAire 20 Gallon horiz tank, probably 20yrs old. I did a leak test today, I found out that it IS leaking at the rate of 18psi/HR. Is that really bad? I want it either way cause i dont have one, and I was recently given some air tools from an uncle and I am dying to use them.

Anyways how bad is 18psi/Hr?

Depends on WHERE the leak is. Get some soapy water and spray it down then look for the bubbles.

Depending on where its leaking from. If its from fittings, lines or drain valves, it can be repaired. If it is leaking from pin holes rusted through the tank, then you will need another tank. Run it up to full pressure & turn it off. Listen for leaks. Use a bottle of soapy water & sprayall the fittings, lines, valves, etc, etc to locate the leaks. Either way, if its free, ya cant go wrong. Also, what is the operating voltage & is it compatible with what you have at home?

That's not that bad for a 20 gallon tank. find where the leak is. it could just be a fitting that needs to be resealed. One way valve is about $15. drain valve $5.

The plug has a vertical and horizontal prong, i think that's 130v, right? The motor says it can be changed to 220v.

I think that it is leaking from the bottom plug, at least that's where it sounds like its leaking from. its all dirty from 20 yrs of build up and i will have to degrease it and then look for the leaks, i know that it needs a new belt cause i grabbed a piece of wood and added tension to the belt and the motor started going faster.

Thanks for the advice, all. I will look for the leak tomorrow.

3 prong plug with one verticle & one horizontal should be a 120V 30 amp circuit.

There's a strong possibility that the valves in the head are leaking. Often when a compressor has a lot of hours or runs a lot because someone has used it for supplying like an air board, sandblaster or something similar that requires constant high flow, the valves will get some carbon on them from the heat or they'll get worn and not seal well.

This type of leak can be fixed pretty easily as well, although the parts might be difficult to find.
